EBSCO eBook Collection

The Compton College Library offers a collection of over 70,000 electronic books through EBSCO. These eBooks can be read on a computer or downloaded to a personal device. If accessing these databases from off-campus or from a personal device, you will be required to sign in with your MyCompton login.

Read eBooks Online 

This option allows you to read EBSCO eBooks directly in a browser window without the need to download to a device or create an individual MyEBSCOhost account.
To read online:

  1. Click on EBSCO eBook CollectionIf accessing from off-campus or your personal device, sign-in with the EBSCO username and password provided by the Library.
  2. Browse the collection by category or type the author, title, subject or ISBN of the book you're looking for in the search box. 
  3. Click on the desired book title or cover image, then select "PDF Full Text" from the left of the screen. This will open the book in your browser.

Download eBooks

EBSCO eBooks may be downloaded for seven days. Depending on the individual title/publisher, the book may not be available to other readers during the seven day checkout period. After the seven days are up, the book will be marked "Expired" and will no longer be readable or accessible. You may return to EBSCO eBooks and check it out again, if it's not currently checked out to another user. 

Users must create and sign-in with an individual MyEBSCOhost account to download eBooks. This account is separate from your MyCompton account used to sign in to the eBook collection.

Step 1: Create a MyEBSCOhost Account

  1. Click on EBSCO eBook Collection. If accessing from off campus or your personal device, sign-in with the EBSCO username and password provided by the Library.
  2. At the top right of the page, select "Sign-In."
  3. On the sign-in page, scroll down to the bottom and select "Create one now."
  4. Follow the instructions to create your MyEBSCOhost account. You will fill out a form and select a username and password.
  5. Select "Save Changes" to complete the creation of your MyEBSCOhost account.

Step 2: Install Required Software for Your Device

After creating your MyEBSCOhost account, select the device you will download to. The software you need to download varies according to the specific type of device you use.

  • DESKTOP & LAPTOP COMPUTERS - Click on Adobe Digital Editions to download and install this free software to your computer. During installation, you will create an Adobe ID. Please remember this username and password!
  • SMARTPHONE & TABLETS - Click on Adobe Digital Editions app to install and authorize this free app on your device. Available only for Apple and Android devices (including Nook and Kindle Fire).

Step 3: Download EBSCO eBook

After completing Step 1 and 2 above, you are now ready to download an EBSCO eBook!
To download:

  1. Click on EBSCO eBook Collection. If accessing from off-campus or your personal device, sign-in with the EBSCO username and password provided by the Library. 
  2. Click on "Sign-In" at the top of the page. Use your individual MyEBSCOhost account to sign-in.
  3. Browse the collection by category or type the author, title, subject or ISBN of the book you're looking for in the search box. 
  4. Click on the desired book title or cover image, then select "Full Download" from the left of the screen. 
  5. On the popup screen, click "Checkout & Download." 
  6. Next, follow the device-appropriate instructions below to open the book:
    • Desktop and laptop computers: open the .acsm file of the book automatically downloaded to your browser. Adobe Digital Editions should display the book. Double click on the book to open it and start reading.
    • Smartphones and tablets: select "Open in EBSCO eBooks" to open the book and start reading. The first time you use the app, you may also need to press "Authorize." The eBook will download to your device.
