ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
Prospective nursing students must complete the following steps in order to obtain an application for admission:
Apply for Admission to Compton College
- New students to the college and students absent for two consecutive primary terms (fall or spring semesters; excluding summer and winter terms) must complete an online application for admission.
- Must have a Compton College Student ID number
- Must submit official high school transcripts or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) or graduated with an associate (AA or AS) or higher degree to the Compton College nursing counselor when applying for admission consideration to the nursing program.
- Submit official transcripts from all accredited colleges and trade schools attended must be on file in the Admission and Records Office.
- Attend an INFORMATION SESSION within one year of applying for admission consideration. Information sessions are held in the fall or spring semesters. Information related to admission requirements and/or program updates will be provided at these sessions.
- Provide proof of a valid social security or tax identification number. Candidates must bring the official social security or tax ID card for the nursing counselor to verify during the counseling appointment.
- Complete NURS 144 (formerly N48) Dosage Calculations and NURS143 (formerly N145) Introduction to Nursing with a "C" or better.
- Complete Medical Terminology 1 or equivalent and Psychology 16 or equivalent with a "C" or better.
- All students applying for admission to the nursing program are required to take the Readiness Assessment Test, which is the ATI Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) exam. The program will invite the student to take the test after application.
Application Filing Period
The nursing program accepts applications twice a year beginning the third week of the fall and spring semester during a three-week period. Applicants interested in applying for admission consideration, must obtain a "Verification of Eligibility" package from the nursing counselor. The "Verification of Eligibility" package and completed applications for admission consideration must be submitted to the nursing department during the specified application-filing period. "Verification of Eligibility" and Admission Applications are not accepted on weekends or holidays. No late or misdirected forms are accepted. The committee will only review completed applications.- Fall 2024 Nursing Program application is open March 3-22, 2024.
- Students interested in applying for admission consideration to the Associate Degree Nursing program must schedule an appointment with the nursing counselor to obtain a verification form, verifying eligibility to apply for admission consideration.
The Associate Degree Nursing program provides the student with the skills to utilize the nursing process and assess unique patient needs across the lifespan using a concept-based approach to learning. Degree competence will be assessed regularly by evaluation of expected learning outcomes in the clinical setting as well as course examinations. Emphasis is placed on the use of critical thinking and creative problem-solving in the clinical setting. The nursing major prepares graduates in a variety of health care settings as entry-level registered nurses. Upon successful completion of the nursing program, the graduate is eligible to take the NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses). Program assessment is conducted by monitoring student success rates on the NCLEX-RN exam.
Program Prerequisites for the Associate Degree
(All Students) Science Courses: Complete the following courses with a minimum 2.5 GPA. All science courses must be completed within seven years prior to the date of nursing program application.
- Anatomy 132 and Physiology 131; or Anatomy and Physiology 134 and 135
- Microbiology 133
- English 101 or English 101AH
- Mathematics 150 or Mathematics 150H
- Medical Terminology 101
- Psychology 116
- Cumulative GPA of 2.5 in all college courses.
- Complete the Readiness Assessment Test - ATI Test of Essential Academic Skills (ATI TEAS) with the state recommended passing score. If a prospective student receives a score below the state recommended score, the student will be required to complete remediation and then retake the ATI TEAS. Students will only have two opportunities to take and successfully pass the TEAS exam. Students who take the TEAS at CC and complete the required remediation are required to retest at CC.
