President/CEO Message

October 4, 2021

First, I would like to thank everyone for their support in implementing the Compton Community College District vaccine requirement. Employees must be vaccinated against COVID-19 or have received an approved medical or religious exemption/accommodation to be allowed on campus. Now we will be working on implementing the vaccine requirement for students; all students enrolled in in-person, on-campus classes must be fully vaccinated by January 1, 2022.  The President/CEO Message - October 4, 2021, includes COVID-19 information and other campus-related updates.

Instructional Building #1 Move-In Week

Next week, Compton College faculty and staff can begin preparing for their moves to the new Instructional Building #1. Faculty shall receive moving instructions from Sheri Berger, vice president of academic affairs, and staff will receive moving instructions from Linda Owens, chief facilities officer. Moving boxes will be delivered to affected employees' offices sometime next week. The goal is for you to pack your personal/office items by Friday, October 29, 2021, with the move occurring the week of Monday, November 1, 2021, through Friday, November 5, 2021. More information on the Instructional Building #1 Move-In will be included in future President/CEO Messages.

Compton College 2024 Student Equity Plan

As mentioned in the President/CEO Message - June 10, 2021, and in the President/CEO Message - September 20, 2021, we are working on our Compton College 2024 Student Equity Plan this fall, which will be linked to the Compton College 2024 Planning documents. As part of the Compton College 2024 Student Equity Plan development, we need your input to create a framework that will inform and help prioritize activities and funding for Compton College. Just a friendly reminder, we are requesting your creative input – all you have to do is complete the Compton College Student Equity Plan Survey, which is available here by Friday, October 8, 2021.

Also, I wanted to share with you the first draft of the Compton College Equity Definition, which is below:

Equity refers to achieving parity in student educational outcomes, regardless of race and ethnicity, backgrounds, or identity. Compton College identifies and removes barriers that produce inequity and intentionally designs or refines services to provide each student with what they need to be successful in their college experience. Compton College students actively define needs and solutions to equity problems on the campus. Equity processes ensure that all people have the opportunity to engage and succeed in a high-quality educational experience, and all students have tools to support their academic career and personal goals.

The definition was shared today at the Consultative Council and managers/supervisors meetings, and it will also be discussed at future Academic Senate and Student Success Committee meetings. If you have any feedback on the draft Compton College Equity Definition, please forward it to Lydell Willis, director of student basic needs & success, at lwillis2@compton.edu.

Upcoming Community Meeting

Compton Community College District Board of Trustees member Dr. Deborah LeBlanc is hosting a Town Hall meeting on Wednesday, October 20, 2021, via Zoom Meeting from 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. The meeting is open to the public and will provide an update on facilities, enrollment, and the College's response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Closing the Loop

  1. During the Consultative Council meeting today, October 4, 2021, the council supported my recommendation to establish a task force to provide a recommendation to me regarding a vaccine incentive for students who provide proof of vaccination. We agreed to the following composition for the Vaccine Incentive Task Force:
    • 3 Associated Student Government Representatives
    • 2 Academic Senate Representatives
    • 2 CCCFE - Classified Unit Representatives
    • 2 Management/Supervisors Representatives

The goal is for the task force to provide a recommendation by Monday, November 15, 2021.

2. Last month we secured funding from the ECMC Foundation for $30,000 to produce a video about Compton College and the Compton Community College District's journey toward accreditation and the separation from the El Camino Community College District. I am looking forward to the opportunity for us to tell our story regarding this incredible journey.

Final Thoughts

I am excited to share that Braiding Crowns of Friendship by Christine Aldrich is available through Amazon. Christine Aldrich is the director of EOPS/CARE at Compton College and an accomplished author. Congratulations to Christine on this accomplishment, and I look forward to reading my copy of the book soon.

As mentioned in the President/CEO Message - September 30, 2021, we have entered into a partnership with the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank to host their mobile food pantry on our campus beginning Tuesday, October 12, 2021, from 1:00 to  3:00 p.m. The flyer for this event will be available soon; please encourage students to participate. Please note, the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank has secured the Los Angeles Rams to serve as a partner for this event, and the Los Angeles Rams are providing additional volunteers.

Also, I hope everyone read the President/CEO Message - September 30, 2021, which included critical decisions regarding the recent Safe Return to Campus decisions. In closing, I hope everyone has a good week, and I am already looking forward to a Zoom Free day.

Please be safe, and have a wonderful week.
