Student Success Spotlight: Araseli Galvez

Araseli Galvez“I decided to attend Compton College because motherhood completely shifted my perspective,” said Araseli Galvez, a wife, mom, and nontraditional Compton College student. “Now, I believe that because of my education, my son will have better opportunities in life. I want to set a positive example of resilience. I want to show him and others, there are no limits. We are often afraid of trying something new, but that doesn’t mean it is not possible.”

A few years before deciding to enroll a Compton College in fall 2024, Galvez left a job where she “felt safe and important” to become a stay-at-home mom, and she quickly realized her new role is one of the “hardest jobs” out there. She initially started college solely as an ESL student to gain better command of the language and has now decided to continue her higher education as a child development major. She also took a noncredit basic career training course that helped make the transition to for-credit classes much easier.

“I arrived at Compton College without any aspirations or plans because I didn’t believe in myself,” said Galvez. “Everything changed when I met my ESL instructor, Brittany Olayele, who also became my mentor. She consistently goes the extra mile to motivate her students. She believed in me and more importantly, she helped me believe in myself.”

Alumna and Transfer Student Emphasizes the Importance of Higher Education

Stephanie LopezStephanie Lopez is a nontraditional student who believes in the power of education, even after her first attempt at getting an education at a different community college significantly challenged her confidence. Today, she is attending California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) as a business administration major after graduating with an associate degree from Compton College in June 2025.

“Earlier this year, I was having a discussion about education with peers where some were questioning why anyone would still choose to go to college these days,” she said. “My answer to that question is: without education, there would be no doctors to heal us, no engineers to build, no teachers to guide, and no voices empowered to speak up for justice.  With education, we unlock everything. We gain tools to solve problems, to lift up our communities, to challenge injustice, and to dream bigger than the world we were born into.”

After initially attending community college prior to 2018, Lopez learned how important it is to select a college not only for its academic programs, but also for how it personally “fits” or matches aspects important to the student such as culture, campus size, support and resources offered, how faculty/staff interact with students, and social characteristics, to name a few.

2025 Graduate Found Her ‘Village’ at Compton College

Shante Mumford“When I first enrolled at Compton College, I didn’t arrive with a perfect plan,” said 2025 Compton College graduate Shante Mumford. “I came with hope—hope that this would be a space where I could finally move forward, where I could breathe, and where I could rewrite the story I once put on hold after facing many challenges and personal loss.”

A nontraditional student, Mumford’s hope and perseverance turned into success in June 2025 as she walked across the stage at Compton College’s commencement ceremony to receive her associate degree. In three years, she earned three associate degrees for transfer, four associate degrees, and two certificates.

“My journey back to education was anything but typical,” Mumford explained. She grew up in North Carolina and attended college right after high school, encouraged by her father, who strongly valued education. However, she soon realized she wasn’t fully ready to commit. She completed a cosmetology program but quickly discovered her heart wasn’t in it. She then moved to Las Vegas on her own, without a support system, and faced some of her biggest setbacks and life lessons.

“During that time, I faced many challenges and made choices that didn’t align with the future I wanted,” she said. “It was a period focused on survival, not growth.” Eventually, she moved back to California, where a friend encouraged her to return to college and helped her enroll at Compton College.

District Approves $1M+ in Student-Centered Investments in 2025–2026 Budget

At its September 8 meeting, the Compton Community College District Board of Trustees approved a forward-looking 2025–2026 budget that invests over $1 million in student success initiatives, including Guided Pathways, faculty hiring, and a new Visual and Performing Arts facility. The budget supports 5,980 FTES and 1,476 course sections, ensuring robust academic offerings for the year ahead.

The final budget reflects current guidance from the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office and includes strategic investments to strengthen academic programs, improve campus infrastructure, and support long-term financial stability.

“This budget reflects our values and priorities, investing in students, faculty, and the future of Compton College,” said Andres Ramos, President of the CCCD Board of Trustees. “We’re proud to support initiatives that expand access, improve outcomes, and strengthen our community.”

Key highlights of the 2025–2026 CCCD Final Budget include:

  • $270,000 for Guided Pathways to help students navigate their educational journey and complete degrees or certificates more efficiently.
