President/CEO Message

November 15, 2021

Campus Community,

Over the next week, all full-time faculty, Classified Staff, and managers/supervisors will receive a special gift from Compton Community College District and Compton College. Please accept this token of our gratitude. We truly appreciate you and the work you are doing in support of student success. This has been an interesting past couple of years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and once again, this will be an abnormal holiday season due to COVID-19. However, I hope you spend time with your family and friends, even if it is virtually.

The President/CEO Message - November 15, 2021, includes COVID-19 information and other campus-related updates.

Compton College COVID-19 Update

Los Angeles County's Daily COVID-19 Data webpage reports 979 newly recorded confirmed cases in Los Angeles County as of 6 p.m. on November 14, 2021. For more information, go to publichealth.lacounty.gov/media/Coronavirus/data/. As of November 12, 2021, 80.8% of Los Angeles County residents have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine; and 73%  are fully vaccinated. For detailed vaccine information, including individual city data, go to publichealth.lacounty.gov/media/coronavirus/vaccine/vaccine-dashboard.  Compton College is operating at Level 3 - Moderate Infection Rate according to the Compton CCD Pandemic Outbreak - Emergency Operations Plan.

Compton College Student Survey Results

Compton College recently surveyed currently enrolled Compton College students (n=4,365). The online survey, administered by the Office of Institutional Effectiveness, received 467 responses resulting in an 11% response rate. Due to the low response rate and the specific target audience, we should use caution when interpreting the results. The survey results will be taken into consideration for the scheduling of classes that meet the needs of current, new, and returning students. The survey results are available here.

Winter 2022 Enrollment Update

As of today, November 15, 2021, Compton College has generated 93 FTES for the winter 2022 term. Our fill rate is currently 34%, and our seats filled is 806. Click here to view today's enrollment snapshot.

Please encourage interested students to check the Searchable Class Schedule, which can be found online at www.compton.edu/studentservices/admissionandrecords/ClassSchedule, for the most up to date information on open sections.

Registration for the Spring 2022 semester begins tomorrow, November 16, 2021. Current Fall 2021 students were sent a reminder this morning via their @compton.edu email and will receive a text message tomorrow.

Important Student Reminder - COVID-19 Vaccine Deadline

Students enrolled in in-person on-campus classes must submit proof of vaccination status before January 1, 2022, as required by Compton CCD Resolution No. 08-17-2021A. All students who submit proof of vaccination status will receive $350 from Compton College, including fall 2021 students.

The Vaccine Incentive Taskforce, first introduced in the President-CEO Message - October 4, 2021, and again in the President/CEO Message - October 25, 2021, has recommended and is finalizing the details for distributing the one-time incentive to all students who submit proof of vaccination status. This week, students will be sent an email with additional information, including a link to upcoming Online Scholarship Workshops scheduled via Zoom.

Final Thoughts

This morning, I had a meeting with the Ending Poverty in California (EPIC) team regarding the EPIC Listening Tour & Student Ideas Contest. The purpose of my meeting was to gather more information on the EPIC Listening Tour & Student Ideas Contest. EPIC is a new nonprofit organization led by former Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs that is focused on eradicating poverty in our state. EPIC's work and policy agenda will be informed by the stories and ideas of people who experience poverty firsthand. That is why EPIC and Mayor Tubbs are inviting students from Compton College to listen and learn from them.

The first 15 students from Compton College who submit an idea, personal experience, potential solutions, or insights for ending poverty in California will receive a $100 gift card for their participation and the opportunity to win $1000. They will also be invited to attend the virtual listening session via Zoom with Mayor Tubbs on December 3, 2021. More information on the EPIC Listening Tour & Student Ideas Contest is available below.

  • Submission Form: https://bit.ly/epiccontest2021
  • Submission Deadline: Wednesday, November 24, 2021
  • Virtual Listening Session: Friday, December 3, 2021

Early next week, students will receive a text message from the College about the EPIC Listening Tour & Student Ideas Contest. In addition, please share this information with interested students, and if you or your students have any questions, please contact info@endpovertyinca.org.

In closing, I wanted to follow up on the President/CEO Message - June 14, 2021, regarding the 2022 Compton College Commencement Ceremony. We have begun planning for Compton College's first in-person commencement ceremony scheduled for Friday, June 10, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. We will recognize the 2020, 2021, and 2022 Compton College graduates. Andree Pacheco, director of student development and athletics, and the Commencement planning committee will develop COVID-19 protocols for the 2022 in-person commencement ceremony and will be working to identify potential keynote speakers. Please forward recommendations for a keynote speaker by Friday, December 3, 2021, to apacheco@compton.edu

Have a wonderful week.
