This past weekend, I was interviewed by two national newspapers about Compton College enrollment and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the President/CEO Message - February 22, 2021, I mentioned the Los Angeles Times article "New map shows deep inequities in L.A.'s COVID-19 vaccine rollout," and how the COVID-19 pandemic, coronavirus-related death toll, and slow vaccine distribution has affected our community.  See the chart below.

From my perspective, Compton College enrollment has been impacted the most in Los Angeles County due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is critical as a college that we continue to focus on our employee's and students' health and safety. At the same time, we must begin planning for the Eventual Return to Campus. The President/CEO Message - March 1, 2021, includes COVID-19 information and other campus-related updates.

Compton College COVID-19 Update

Los Angeles County's current risk level is Tier 1 (widespread), according to California's "Blueprint for a Safer Economy." On February 28, 2021, there were 1,064 newly recorded confirmed cases in Los Angeles County. The county now has a total of 1,91,923 reported cases (including cases reported by Long Beach and Pasadena Health Departments). Spring 2021 Enrollment Update

As of today, March 1, 2021, Compton College has generated 1,266 FTES for the Spring 2021 semester; the fill rate is currently 55%, and our seats filled is 8,371. The Spring 2021 Enrollment Report is available here. Census for the Main Term will be taken at the close of business tonight.  Late start classes are still available. Click here for a list. Please encourage interested students to enroll as soon as possible.

Compton CCD's Full-Time Equivalent Students (FTES) Hold Harmless Provision Extension Request

As mentioned in the President/CEO Message - November 16, 2021 and the President/CEO Message - June 25, 2020, Compton CCD has FTES hold-harmless funding provision at 5,980 FTES during the 2020-2021 year and through the 2025-2026 year. On February 26, 2021, a letter was sent to Senator Steven Bradford and Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson requesting their support of extending the Compton CCD's Full-Time Equivalent Students (FTES) Hold Harmless Provision from 2025-2026 to 2028-2029. Manage your Zoom Recordings to Prepare for Future Changes

As mentioned in the President/CEO Message - February 18, 2021 the California Community Colleges TechConnect is addressing the ConferZoom cloud storage space. The California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office issued the following update:

Effective March 8, 2021, all Tech Connect Zoom recordings with a creation date prior to August 15, 2020 will be deleted for user accounts. Once these files are deleted, they will be held in Zoom trash and available for retrieval by you for 30 days after the date of deletion. However, after 30 days in Zoom trash, any recordings held there will be permanently removed and no longer accessible.

Tech Connect recommends the following steps to proactively manage your Zoom cloud recordings:

  1. Decide which recordings you need to keep long-term. Review all recordings in your TechConnect Zoom account and determine which need to be used again or saved and which can be discarded.
  2. Download recordings you need to keep. Manage your recordings you decided to use again or save by downloading them locally to your desktop, then move them to a different storage repository for later access.
  3. Delete recordings you no longer need. Be sure to delete all recordings that you no longer need from your Zoom account, along with all those that you downloaded to your desktop. Make a habit of doing this regularly.

Compton College is developing policies and best practices for the retention of Zoom recordings for both instructional and non-instructional purposes.

Compton College Dean's List

During the 2018-2019 year, Compton College, through our partnership with El Camino Community College District, had a Dean's List. However, since the separation from El Camino College, we have not implemented our own Dean's List. I have asked Sheri Berger, Vice President of Academic Affairs, to work with the Compton College Academic Senate on a Dean's List Board Policy and an Administrative Procedure for Compton CCD. The goal is to begin implementing the Compton College Dean's List in fall 2021.

Compton Community College District Board of Trustees Meeting

The Compton CCD Board of Trustees' next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 16, 2021. The closed session begins at 4:00 p.m., with the open session commencing at 5:00 p.m. via Zoom Meeting. Information on how to access the Compton CCD Board of Trustees meeting is available here.

Final Thoughts

We will finalize the Compton College Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund II (HEERF) Budget in the coming weeks. The draft Compton College HEERF II Budget is available for your review here. One strategy will be implementing a Compton College Call Center to reengage former Compton College students to enroll for the spring 2021 second 8-week session, summer 2021, and fall 2021. Below is the data of former Compton College students who have not enrolled in the spring 2021 semesters.

The Compton College Call Center will be housed on campus under the direction of Dr. Cesar Jimenez, Acting Vice President, Student Services and will be staff by Student Ambassadors. The Student Ambassadors will contact students and refer them to their Guided Pathways Division Student Services Advisor or a counselor for assistance. More information on the Compton College Call Center will be included in a future President/CEO - Message. The goal for the Compton College Call Center is to encourage former students to enroll at Compton College.
