President/CEO Message

June 24, 2021

As stated in many President/CEO Messages, we have several construction projects in progress at Compton College, including the Instructional Buildings #1 and #2 and the Student Services Building. In addition, in spring 2022, we anticipate beginning the Administration Building Renovation Project. We are also in the planning phase for the Physical Education Complex. Also, the California Governor's Proposed Budget included the Compton College Visual and Performing Arts Replacement Project.

Each year, we must submit our Five-Year Construction Plan to the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office. Also, we are required to submit Initial Project Proposals or Final Project Proposals to the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office for future facilities projects that we are requesting state funding. This year we are submitting a Final Project Proposal for the Child Development Renovation Project, and we will be submitting an Initial Project Proposal for a new Student Engagement and Teaching Excellence Center. This project was initially proposed as only a Student Activities Center in Compton College 2024. However, I am recommending changes to this project so that it would include the Bookstore, Cafeteria, Student Government, and Student Activities. Furthermore, we will be able to have a Teaching Excellence Center for Professional Development and much-needed campus meeting spaces. If you have creative input regarding the proposed Student Engagement and Teaching Excellence Center facilities project, please send suggestions to kcurry@compton.edu.

The President/CEO Message - June 24 2021, includes COVID-19 information and other campus-related updates.

Compton College COVID-19 Update

Los Angeles County's Daily COVID-19 Data webpage reports 260 newly recorded confirmed cases in Los Angeles County as of 6 p.m. on June 23, 2021. The county now has a total of 1,248,128 reported cases (including cases reported by Long Beach and Pasadena health departments). For more information, go to publichealth.lacounty.gov/media/Coronavirus/data/. Compton College is operating at Level 3 - Moderate Infection Rate according to the Compton CCD Pandemic Outbreak - Emergency Operations Plan.

Like many of you, I am aware of and monitoring the spread of the Delta variant in California. As we receive more information and guidance, we will share it with the campus community.

Face Coverings Required on Campus

As mentioned in my email to the campus community yesterday, June 23, 2021, to help ensure the health and safety of the Compton College campus community and the public, face coverings are required to be worn on campus by all individuals, including employees, students, construction workers, vendors, and visitors:

a)      Indoors when other people are present, including common areas such as hallways, restrooms, and elevators, and

b)      Outdoors when keeping a 6-foot distance from others is not possible.

To ensure that masks are worn consistently and correctly, employees are discouraged from eating or drinking except during their breaks when they can safely remove their masks and physically distance themselves from others. This requirement follows federal and state safety requirements and local public health directives, including the CDC's "How to Wear Face Coverings" guidelines (updated June 11, 2021).

Final Thoughts

Like many of you, I watch our enrollment numbers every day, and I remain concerned about our declining enrollment. Therefore, in the President/CEO Message - May 27, 2021, and the President/CEO Message - June 3, 2021, I provided an update on some of our Outreach and Recruitment Strategies related to summer and fall 2021.

This week, we began implementing our partnership with Swim Digital Group who will be assisting us with the acquisition of new students to increase the enrollment for fall 2021. The recruitment campaign will focus on four target audiences within our District: Oliver W. Conner College Promise eligible students; the parents of Promise-eligible students; adult learners between the ages of 25-45 who are underemployed or unemployed; and prospective English as a Second Language students. The campaign is scheduled to go live on Tuesday, July 6, 2021.

Also, this week we hired additional student workers for the Compton College Call Center, and the goal is for the Call Center to operate on campus beginning Tuesday, July 6, 2021. The Call Center student workers are currently calling former Compton College students encouraging them to enroll for the second six-week summer session. An update on the 2021-2022 Outreach and Recruitment Strategies will be included in the President/CEO Message - June 28, 2021.

Tomorrow, June 25, 2021, is our first Friday off, and I am incredibly excited. I want to wish everyone a wonderful weekend.

Sincerely,

Keith Curry, Ed.D.
