President/CEO Message

June 21, 2021

Welcome to the beginning of the summer 2021 term. We are off to a fast start! I don't know about you, but I feel the work we are doing to support student success is ongoing. This weekend, I read many articles and research publications about declining community college enrollment, Black and Males of Color Success, and unemployment benefits in California. I am also in the process of preparing my fall 2021 reading list. If you have any recommendations for articles or research publications I should read; or books for my fall 2021 reading list, please forward them to me at kcurry@compton.edu. The President/CEO Message - June 17, 2021, includes COVID-19 information and other campus-related updates.

Compton College COVID-19 Update

Los Angeles County's Daily COVID-19 Data webpage reports 258 newly recorded confirmed cases in Los Angeles County as of 6 p.m. on June 20, 2021. The county now has a total of 1,247,618 reported cases (including cases reported by Long Beach and Pasadena health departments). For more information, go to publichealth.lacounty.gov/media/Coronavirus/data/. Compton College is operating at Level 3 - Moderate Infection Rate according to the Compton CCD Pandemic Outbreak - Emergency Operations Plan.

The County of Los Angeles Department of Public Health (LADPH) issued a new "Safer Together at Work and in the Community" Health Order that went into effect at 12:01 a.m. on June 15, 2021. The order rescinds most LACDPH sector-specific protocols and aligns with the California Department of Public Health's new public health order "Beyond the Blueprint for Industry and Business Sectors" and the accompanying memoranda and orders of the State Public Health Officer. The LACDPH health order urges everyone, especially those who are not or cannot be vaccinated against COVID-19, to continue to exercise caution and good judgment as physical distancing requirements and capacity limitations are removed.

Compton College and the Compton Community College District continue to follow the guidelines outlined in the LACDPH "Protocol for Institutes of Higher Education" which were last updated on May 11, 2021. Certain appendix items, such as the Protocols for Office Worksites and In-Person Services in Libraries, have been retired and are no longer required in the Compton College "Safe Return to Campus Plan." The on-campus cafeteria is in the process of reopening soon, and with the retirement of the Protocol for Restaurants, services will resume under the new LADPH health order.

Safe Return to Campus Decisions

As a follow-up to the President/CEO Message - April 29, 2021, and to allow employees the time to plan and make necessary arrangements, I would like to announce the following:

  1. The Library-Student Success Center and Enrollment Services will provide walk-in services to all students beginning Tuesday, July 6, 2021, with no appointment necessary. Students will use the Artesia Boulevard entrance and proceed through the Entry to Campus checkpoint. Students will need to specify what services they would like to access (Library, Student Success Center, Enrollment Services, or Bookstore). Entry to Campus Staff will log them in after completing the screening process, including the online wellness survey.
  2. All managers/supervisors will work on campus at least three days per week, beginning Monday, August 9, 2021.
  3. The Compton College Bookstore will open to students and employees on Tuesday, July 6, 2021.
  4. As mentioned in my President/CEO Message - May 27, 2021, we were scheduled to open the cafeteria today, June 21, 2021. Due to some construction issues beyond our control, the opening has been delayed. Now the cafeteria is scheduled to open on Tuesday, July 6, 2021. If the schedule changes, we will communicate it to the campus community. Until then, we will continue to have a food truck on campus available for students and employees.

President/CEO Closing the Loop

Last week in the President/CEO Message - June 17, 2021, I mentioned I would share decisions regarding the 2021-2022 Budget Augmentations and Enhancements in the President/CEO Message - January 21, 2021. However, I meant to say the President/CEO Message - June 21, 2021. One person caught that error, Compton CCD Board of Trustees Clerk Barbara Calhoun, who said, "I knew you were tired when you wrote the message." I was tired last Thursday but wanted to make sure I communicated those critical decisions. Today, I am pleased to announce the following 2021-2022 Budget Augmentations and Enhancements.
