Happy Monday, the final Monday in July 2021. The Compton CCD Board of Trustees held their first Board Retreat of the 2021 year on July 24, 2021. The Board of Trustees reviewed their January 1, 2021, through June 30, 2021 Goals and completed their board evaluation and assessment of their progress toward completing those goals. Furthermore, the Board of Trustees developed their goals for the 2021-2022 year.  The Board of Trustees' 2021-2022 Goals will be reviewed, discussed, and acted on at the August 17, 2021 Board meeting. The Board of Trustees' 2021-2022 Goals are aligned to the Compton College 2024 Strategic Initiatives. After the goals have been approved by the Board of Trustees, I will ask the managers/supervisors to have regular discussions on the Compton CCD Board of Trustees' 2021-2022 Goals, the 2021-2022 Compton College Goals, and the Compton College Institutional-Set Goals during their program, department, and division meetings.

Compton College COVID-19 Update

Los Angeles County's Daily COVID-19 Data webpage reports 2,089 newly recorded confirmed cases in Los Angeles County as of 6 p.m. on July 25, 2021. The county now has a total of 1,283,844 reported cases (including cases reported by Long Beach and Pasadena health departments). For more information, go to Compton College is operating at Level 4 - Severe Infection Rate according to the Compton CCD Pandemic Outbreak - Emergency Operations Plan.

Fall 2021 Enrollment Update

As of today, July 26, 2021, Compton College has generated 673 FTES for the Fall 2021 term. Our fill rate is currently 26%, and our seats filled is 4,234. Click here to view today's enrollment snapshot.

The fall semester begins Saturday, August 21, 2021, with weekday classes beginning on Monday, August 23, 2021. Please encourage students to apply and register as soon as possible as some sections are already full.

Safe Return to Campus Decisions

As a follow-up to the President/CEO Message - April 29, 2021, and the President/CEO Message - June 21, 2021, and to allow employees the time to plan and make necessary arrangements. First, as a reminder, all managers/supervisors will work on campus at least three days per week, beginning Monday, August 9, 2021. Second, on Tuesday, September 7, 2021, Classified staff who have been working remotely will be returning to campus for a minimum of two days per week, and all part-time Classified employees will be assigned to work on campus at least 60% of their regular schedule. I have asked the members of Cabinet and the Pandemic Coordinators to begin working on an implementation timeline regarding this decision. More information regarding this decision will be communicated to the campus community in future President/CEO Messages. 

President/CEO Closing the Loop

In the President/CEO Message - April 22, 2021, I mentioned the Auxiliary Services Committee provides funding opportunities for programs that directly support student learning. Last Thursday, I approved the following recommendations from the Auxiliary Services Committee for 2021-2022.

Athletics: Meal Money for Student-Athletes $22,000 Approved. Please note, the Athletics Department has an ongoing budget of $16,000 for Meal Money for Student-Athletes. This will increase the total budget to $36,000 for meal money.
STEM Center - Hands-on STEM workshops $3,100 Approved
Transfer & Career Center - Food vouchers for the Transfer Fair, Career Center Padfolios, and Transfer Admit Recognition event $6,900 Approved

Since all the 2021-2022 year funds have not been disbursed, I will request the Auxiliary Services Committee accept proposals again for funding in September 2021 for the 2021-2022 year. 

Final Thoughts

Last week, I received notification from the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office regarding our new Visual and Performing Arts Replacement Project. We will begin accepting Requests for Qualifications for architectural services for this $11.7 million project in the coming weeks. I am hoping we have an architect selected for this project by November 2021. This is excellent news for Compton College and Compton Community College District.

As mentioned in the President/CEO Message - June 7, 2021, President/CEO Message - July 1, 2021, and the President/CEO Message - July 22, 2021, regarding Discharging Compton College Students' Unpaid Enrollment Fees from Spring 2020 through Spring 2021, I have been reviewing preliminary data regarding the student population whom unpaid enrollment fees will be canceled. In total, we have 2,702 students who have enrollment, student activities, student representation, as well as health fees that will be canceled. The median owed to the college for this group is $41. What's interesting about this data is that 44.65% of the students who owe fees that will be canceled are between the ages of 18-24, and 36.28% are male. In the coming weeks, our Institutional Effectiveness Department will finalize its report on the Discharging Compton College Students' Unpaid Enrollment Fees from Spring 2020 through Spring 2021. In fall 2021, I will ask the Student Success Committee and the Tartar Support Network to review and provide recommendations on assisting students with their future fees.
