Student Services Advisor and Foster Youth Advocate Receives Recognition

Louis Williams, El Camino College Compton Center student services advisor, was recently honored with a 2016 Pearl Award by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. The sorority’s philanthropic arm, The Pearl Foundation, Inc., along with the local Theta Alpha Omega chapter of Long Beach annually honors those who provide outstanding contributions of community service in the areas of educational enrichment, health promotion, family strengthening, environmental ownership, and global impact.

Williams is the Youth Empowerment Strategies for Success (YESS) coordinator at ECC Compton Center and works with foster youth providing educational workshops focusing on financial literacy, employment, and life skills to supplement their academic studies. YESS is a comprehensive and integrated program that unites community partners and academic leaders to empower foster youth (ages 16- 21) to successfully transition into independent living. Williams also serves as a regional Foster Youth Success Initiative liaison.

Williams was honored in the educational enrichment category for his continued work toward empowering foster youth to become leaders of change in their own communities. He generously donates his time with several organizations in support of education and at-risk youth, including the We Are Ohana Foundation, Inc. where he serves as a board member; the Millennium Momentum Foundation; and the Los Angeles Council of Black Professional Engineers’ Excell Program.

Williams joined ECC Compton Center in 2014 as a part-time coordinator of the YESS Independent Living Program and was hired as a full-time student services advisor in April 2016. He earned a bachelor’s degree in interpersonal and organizational communication studies from California State University, Long Beach, where he also minored in African Studies.

The YESS Program at El Camino College Compton Center is open to foster care youth between the ages of 16 and 21 residing in the cities served by the Compton Community College District. Click here for more information about YESS.
