Girls and Women in Technology Conference April 20

Even though women make up nearly half of the labor market today, they are overwhelmingly underrepresented in technical and trade industries across the United States. Women make up just 30 percent of manufacturing employees, 9 percent of construction workers and only 6 percent of welders and equipment maintenance service workers—all industries that offer plenty of employment opportunities, decent wages and competitive benefits.

Compton College offers job training in many of these fields and wants to help more females explore career opportunities they may not have considered. That is why the college is hosting a free "Girls and Women in Technology Conference" from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on April 20, 2018. Female students and members of the community who are interested in exploring non-traditional careers are invited to attend. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. in the Gymnasium, followed by a variety of workshops conducted in the Vocational Technology Building.

The technology conference will introduce women and girls to educational paths and jobs in non-traditional careers that offer high pay, great benefits and job security. Compton College's Career Advancement Academy (CAA) and Career and Technical Education (CTE) department faculty, along with community agencies, will conduct the workshops. A job and resource fair is also on the day's agenda. Participants must wear closed shoes in order to attend the conference.

The workshops will cover information on a variety of career fields. These hands-on, interactive workshops offer a look into career opportunities in areas such as welding, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), machine tool technology, aerospace fastener manufacturing, robotics, computer technology, commercial music, EMT/Fire technology, and more. Information on Compton College's CAA/CTE programs, registered apprenticeships and free job training opportunities will also be provided.

The Girls and Women in Technology Conference sponsors include Compton College's Career Advancement Academy, Career Pathways, Career and Technical Education, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Icebreakers Club, R.E. Michel Company, and Women in Technology (WIT). To register, contact Compton College's Career Advancement Academy at 310-900-1600, ext. 2779, or email Participants who pre-register will receive a complimentary lunch and other giveaways.
