President/CEO Message

June 29, 2020

Campus Community,

In two more days, we will begin the new fiscal year, and I will start my tenth year as the Chief Executive Officer for Compton Community College District. This has been one incredible ride, including both good and challenging times, and the most rewarding professional experience of my lifetime. The President/CEO Message - June 29, 2020, includes COVID-19 information and other campus-related updates.

Compton College COVID-19 Update - June 29, 2020
As of June 28, 2020, there are a total of 216,550 positive cases and 5,936 deaths in California. For more information, go to www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/Pages/Immunization/ncov2019. Compton College continues to operate at Level Four - Severe Infection Rate, according to the Compton CCD Pandemic Outbreak - Emergency Operations Plan.

Enrollment Update
As of today, June 29, 2020, Compton College has generated 498 Full-Time Equivalent Students for summer 2020. Our fill rate is at 68%, and our seats filled is 3,667. Click here for the current summer 2020 Enrollment Snapshot. Please encourage new students to register for the second six-week session that begins on Monday, July 6, 2020.

Beginning Wednesday, July 1, 2020, we will begin providing Fall 2020 Enrollment Updates to the campus community.

Compton College Accreditation Oversight
With the recent hiring of Sheri Berger as the Vice President of Academic Affairs, I wanted to update the campus community regarding the oversight of the Compton College Accreditation efforts. Lauren Sosenko, Director of Institutional Effectiveness, will remain as the Accreditation Liaison Officer (ALO) for Compton College with the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges. Sheri Berger will replace me as the tri-chair of the Accreditation Steering Committee and will have administrative oversight of all Accreditation activities at Compton College. The Accreditation Steering Committee Tri-Chairs, Lauren Sosenko, Amber Gillis, and Sheri Berger will meet monthly to discuss Compton College Accreditation activities. Lauren Sosenko and Amber Gillis, the Faculty Accreditation Coordinator, will report directly to Sheri Berger on Compton College Accreditation activities.

Over the past couple of months, we have been reviewing our Accreditation Standard Committees and the level of participation.  My recommendation is to assign the responses for each of the standards to an existing Compton College Institutional Standing committee. This will eliminate the need for individual standard committees, and the Accreditation activities will be incorporated into ongoing Compton College efforts.

Multi-factor Authentication for Microsoft Office 365
In my President/ CEO Message - May 13, 2020, I mentioned security improvements for all Compton College Microsoft 365 accounts as we work remotely. ITS will be enabling multi-factor authentication (also called two-step verification) for all @compton.edu user accounts. Please note, we have delayed our implementation, and the process will begin with managers/supervisors in July 2020, Classified staff in July 2020 and August 2020, and faculty accounts during the fall 2020 semester. The Zoom training dates for the Multi-factor Authentication for Microsoft Office 365 will be provided in future President/CEO Messages.

President/CEO Virtual Office Hours
Tomorrow, June 30, 2020, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., I will be hosting virtual office hours (formerly called "Open Door") Employees may join via Zoom and ask me questions. Login information was emailed to all faculty, Classified staff, and managers/supervisors today, June 29, 2020. This is your opportunity to meet with me one-on-one.

Compton College Facilities Update
On Tuesday, July 21, 2020, Board of Trustees meeting, the Board will receive an update on Compton College Facilities Projects. The update will include project reports on  Instructional Buildings 1 & 2, the Student Services Building, and the Physical Education Complex. Also, we will discuss two new projects that we are requesting state funding for the Visual and Performing Arts Replacement Project, and the Child Development Building (Abel B. Sykes, Building T) Renovation Project. For more information on the Compton College Facilities Master Plan, please click here and review pages 99 through 119.

Final Thoughts
Over the past couple of weeks, we have been monitoring COVID-19 and the increases in confirmed cases locally. I want to make sure we continue planning the gradual return to campus while monitoring the infection rates in our community and the impact it will have on our institution. There are so many unknowns, and we will have to adjust as we receive more information from the county. The information we are receiving on COVID-19 is changing every day. I was asked today about spring 2021 and whether it will be online or face-to-face and my response "at this time, I do not know."

Furthermore, I am repeatedly asked about community college athletics. The California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Board of Directors is scheduled to meet on Friday, July 17, 2020,  to discuss the CCCAA COVID-19 Working Group -  Recommendations for Athletics in the 2020-21 Academic Year that was approved by the Board of Directors on June 5, 2020. Before that meeting, I have a meeting with community college presidents from our athletic conference to get a better understanding of what those colleges are planning for fall 2020. We will keep the campus community informed as decisions are made regarding community college athletics for the 2020-2021 year.

The District and its employees need to be flexible as our current situation is ever-changing. Your safety and well-being, and that of our students is our top priority and decisions should not be made in haste. I appreciate the input we have received from employees and students as we continue to develop an appropriate Eventual Return to Campus Plan for all concerned parties.
