Conference Introduces Women to Non-Traditional Careers

El Camino College Compton Center hosted a free "Girls and Women in Technology Conference" on March 10. Female students and members of the community interested in exploring non-traditional careers were invited to attend. Breakfast, registration, a welcome address and panel discussion kicked off the conference, followed by a variety of workshops conducted in the Vocational Technology Building.

The technology conference introduced women and girls to educational paths and jobs in non-traditional careers that offer high pay, great benefits and job security. ECC Compton Center's Career Advancement Academy (CAA) and Career and Technical Education (CTE) department faculty, along with community agencies, conducted the workshops.

A job and resource fair was also on the day's agenda. The workshops offered information on a variety of career fields. These hands-on, interactive workshops offered a look into career opportunities in areas such as welding, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), machine tool technology, aerospace fastener manufacturing, robotics, computer technology, commercial music, EMT/Fire technology, and more. Information on ECC Compton Center's CAA/CTE programs, registered apprenticeships and free job training opportunities was also provided.

The Girls and Women in Technology Conference sponsors include ECC Compton Center's Career Advancement Academy, Career Pathways, Career and Technical Education, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Icebreakers Club, R.E. Michel Company, and Women in Technology (WIT).
