Congratulations to 2014 Distinguished Faculty and Staff Honorees!

El Camino College Compton Center is proud to recognize its honorees for the 2014 Distinguished Faculty and Staff awards. Essie French Preston, counselor and professor, and Alice Mitchell, staff member, were recognized for their high level of commitment to students, ECC Compton Center and their profession.

Essie French PrestonDr. Essie French Preston, recipient of the Distinguished Faculty award, joined the Compton Community College District in 2005. Preston upholds the educational mission of the district as an advocate for student success. As a counselor, she helps students develop comprehensive educational plans, and refers them to the vital support services offered at ECC Compton Center. She was one of the first counselors to teach Human Development 10 – Strategies for Creating Success in College and in Life for the First Year Experience program, and helped recruit many students for the program. She engages in developmental activities to remain current in the delivery of support services to students. She participated in statewide educational planning as the Region 7 matriculation representative for the Student Success Act of 2012 (SB 1456). In addition, Preston has written several proposals for grants that have resulted in funding for programs that will provide increased opportunities and access for ECC Compton Center students. Preston earned both an Ed.D. in instructional leadership and an Ed.S. in guidance and counseling from the University of Alabama; a master’s degree in guidance and counseling from the University of South Alabama; and a bachelor’s degree from Alabama State University.

Alice MitchellAlice Mitchell, recipient of the Distinguished Staff award, has served the Compton Community College District for 27 years. She is a people-person who strives to go above and beyond, and enjoys building a rapport with the campus community. She has held staff positions in several departments including Admissions and Records, Athletics, and the Cafeteria. For the last 20 years, she has worked in the Maintenance and Facilities department as a shipping and receiving clerk. Mitchell is an alumna of the former Compton College where she earned an associate degree in engineering. She is dedicated to her work and known for her caring and helpful attitude toward students, faculty, and staff alike.
