Winter & Spring 2021 Registration in Progress; Students Encouraged to Register Now

Life may be temporarily on pause, but achieving your educational goals doesn’t have to be! Registration is currently in progress at Compton College for the winter term 2021 and spring semester 2021, and we have a complete menu of student support services to help you be successful with online/distance learning. In addition to financial aid and assistance grants, Compton College offers students laptop computer and Wi-fi hotspot loans, free food resources, online counseling and tutoring, as well as online workshops and assistance with the enrollment and registration process.

Winter Term 2021

Registration is currently in progress for the winter term 2021, which begins January 5, 2021. The winter term provides a great opportunity for students to get ahead in their educational plan and complete up to seven units in five weeks! The winter term is perfect for helping students graduate sooner, improve a GPA, repeat an essential course, and lighten the course load for spring, as well as satisfy any prerequisites. Students may register via MyCompton accessible from the college website at www.compton.edu.

Spring Semester 2021

Registration for the spring semester began on Dec. 1, 2020 and continuing students should check MyCompton for their spring registration appointment dates/times. Full-term spring classes begin February 16 and end on June 11, 2021, with mid-term classes also available. 

“I’m on a pre-nursing track and taking the maximum classes during winter term has enabled me to complete all my transfer requirements in less than two years!” said Steve Hsin, a current Compton College student. “I enrolled at Compton College in fall 2019 and have taken a full load every semester and term since then. I’ve been accepted to the competitive nursing program at California State University, Long Beach beginning in spring 2021.”

Students Encouraged to Apply for Scholarships

The Compton College Scholarship Application is now open! Students with a 2.0 grade point average or better who have completed, or are in the process of completing, a minimum of six graded credit units at Compton College are encouraged to apply by the February 28, 2021 deadline. Scholarships range from $500 to $1,000 and may be used to help pay for tuition, books, fees and supplies. The scholarship programs base eligibility on diverse criteria including honors and academic achievement, financial need, leadership and community service, organizational and campus club affiliation, and more. Compton College Responds to California Community Colleges Chancellor’s ‘Call to Action’

At its regular meeting on November 17, 2020, the Compton Community College District Board of Trustees approved its documented plan for Compton College in response to California Community Colleges Chancellor Eloy Ortiz Oakley’s June 2020 “Call to Action” to actively strategize against structural racism, poverty, and social injustice within the state’s community college system. Compton College’s Response to California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Call to Action is available on the college’s website.

On June 5, 2020, the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office released a Call to Action letter outlining Chancellor Oakley’s request for all California Community Colleges to respond to systemic racism by urgently working to: 1) conduct a system-wide review of law enforcement officers and first responder training, 2) host open dialogue and review campus climate, 3) audit classroom climate and create inclusive classrooms and anti-racism curriculum, 4) review and update Equity Plans, 5) shorten the time frame for full implementation of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Integration Plan, and 6) system-wide engagement in the Vision Resource Center “Community Colleges for Change.

Meet 2020-21 Associated Student Body President Queen Ashanti Juarez Ward

Queen Ashanti Juarez Ward was elected earlier this year by her peers to serve as president of the Associated Student Body (ASB) for the 2020-21 academic year. She was inspired to run for an office on the ASB Council by her passion for helping others. “I wish to share my experience and knowledge of available resources, both at Compton College and in the community, with other students as they take their guided pathway in education to another level,” said Juarez Ward. “Helping others is like my therapy; I love to see students, our college, and the community thrive.”

She is a behavioral science major with aspirations to pursue a career as a high school or college administrator. She is also pursuing a certificate in health and fitness. Juarez Ward is on track to graduate from Compton College with an associate degree in spring 2021 and transfer to a four-year university. She plans to apply to the California State University system, private colleges, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and Hispanic-serving institutions. She is also counting on her academic performance to help earn financial aid and scholarships to lighten the financial burden. “I am the oldest of five sisters and I want to be their role model,” she said.

Local High School Seniors: Attend Compton College Nearly Free of Cost! 

The Oliver W. Connor College Promise program pays for 2021 high school graduates' first two years of enrollment fees at Compton College and provides $400 per year for textbooks and course materials and supplies.

Current high school seniors from the Compton, Lynwood and Paramount unified school districts may apply NOW for the Oliver W. Connor College Promise program for fall 2021. Compton College’s Educational Partnerships team mailed out letters to high school seniors in the participating districts with the Oliver W. Connor College Promise program enrollment information and will be continuing outreach efforts.

Winter 2021 Student Resources Available; Apply Now!

Currently enrolled Compton College students are encouraged to apply for Winter 2021 Student Resources, including laptop computers, Wi-Fi hotspots, food resources, financial resources, and housing grants. Technology will be distributed to students beginning January 4, 2021. Students are encouraged to complete the Compton College Resources Form, available here. All resources and services are available on a first-come-first-served basis to students enrolled for Winter 2021 classes at Compton College.

Facilities News

Watch Us Grow!

The Compton Community College District grounds continue to improve thanks to funds from Measure CC and Measure C supported by voters in 2002 and 2014, respectively. Facilities projects currently in construction: 

• Instructional Building 1: The $18.8 million project includes the removal of Row Buildings G, half of F, two-thirds of E, and Modular Buildings M1 and M2 (total of 6 structures) to replace them with a state-of-the-art, multi-story classroom building on the north end of campus. Estimated Completion: April/May 2021
• Instructional Building 2: This $25.6 million project involves the removal of Row Buildings D, and the remainder of Row E and F buildings, and construction of a second state-of-the-art, 30,200 square-foot instructional building. Instructional Buildings 1 and 2 will be part of a new academic village that will eventually include a third multi-story instructional building. Estimated Completion: Fall 2021
• Student Services Building: This $25 million, 36,712 square-foot two-story building will become a one-stop hub for all student services. The project involves the demolition of the former Library Building. Estimated Completion: December 2021

Compton Community College District Board of Trustee Members Take Oath of Office

The Compton Community College District (CCCD) held a swearing-in ceremony for its Board of Trustee members on Dec. 8, 2020. Two of the five trustee areas were up for election during the November 3, 2020 general election. Incumbent Trustees Barbara Jean Calhoun, Trustee Area 2 and Sonia Lopez, Trustee Area 3 were each elected to another term.

As part of its annual organizational meeting on Dec. 8, 2020, the Board of Trustees also elected officers. Sonia Lopez was elected president, Dr. Sharoni Little was elected vice president, and Barbara Calhoun will serve as clerk. Compton Community College District CEO, Dr. Keith Curry, was appointed secretary.

In addition, Andres Ramos will serve as the district representative to the Los Angeles County School Trustees Association, Barbara Calhoun will serve as a member of the Los Angeles County Committee on School District Organization, and Dr. Deborah LeBlanc was appointed to review nominations for membership on the California Community Colleges Trustees Board.

Compton Community College District Board Meeting Scheduled for January 19

The next meeting of the Compton Community College District (CCCD) Board of Trustees is scheduled for Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at 5:00 p.m. via Zoom. All regular session Board meetings are open to the public. Closed session begins at 4:00 p.m.

Free Grocery Distribution for Students & Employees

Compton College and Sunrise Produce provided current students and employees with a 30 lb. box of groceries. Contactless pickup took place on throughout November and December. Click here to view photos of some of the volunteers and grocery boxes.

 

Compton College Tarter Talks November 24 Recap

Compton College President Keith Curry host a virtual Tartar Talks for District employees on Nov. 24, 2020, via Zoom. The campuswide update included information about the 2020-2021 Compton Community College District Final Budget, Guided Pathways, COVID-19, 2020-2021, and the Compton District’s Legislative Agenda.
