President/CEO Workgroup and Taskforce Update

December 8, 2020 Update

Foster Youth/Guardian Scholars

Chair: Oluwatosin Williams, Coordinator of Student Services  

Mission: Provide input regarding foster youth needs on campus, and guide policies and practices of the Guardian Scholars program. 

Current Activities:  

  • Plan workshops for Spring 2021 - Highlighting beneficial community resources
  • Create a network of online services: Virtual introductions made to many community organizations
  • Introduce warm handoffs to Compton College
  • Share Compton College news with the community - Ongoing
  • Foster Kinship Care Education is providing workshops to parents and caregivers - Ongoing

LGBTQ+ Work Group

Chair: Andree Pacheco, Director of Student Development and Athletics

Mission: The LGBTQ+ workgroup is a diverse representation of Compton College faculty and staff working collaboratively to develop social programs, interventions, and initiatives for the LGBTQ+ community. This workgroup recognizes the social challenges facing the LGBTQ+ community in public post-secondary education. The committee is devoted to creating an institutional safe space that will address inequities by implementing effective and engaging policies that facilitate academic success /encourage, uplift, and inspire the LGBTQ+ community.

Current Activities:

  1. Meeting Schedule for the fall 2020 term: biweekly, Thursdays 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.
  2. Virtual Professional Development:
    1. Fall 2020: October 27, 12:00 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.
      1. Topic: Understanding LGBTQ+: What does it mean?
      2. Total of 26 employees attended the training.
      3. Several employees expressed interest in joining the LGBTQ+ Work Group, communication went out to them on how to be involved in future meetings.

Men of Color

Chair: Christopher Perez, Student Activities Coordinator (Office of Student Development), Oluwatosin Williams, Coordinator of Student Services (Office of Student Equity), Bradfield Conn, Professor (Psychology)

Mission: The Men of Color Task Force is a diverse representation of Compton College faculty and staff working collaboratively that develops academic and social programs, interventions, and initiatives that will address the educational crisis facing men of color. The Men of Color Task Force recognizes the academic and social challenges facing men of color in public post-secondary education and is committed to addressing inequities and implementing effective and engaging policies that facilitate academic success and encourage, uplift, and inspire men of color.

UndocuAlly Taskforce

Chair: Christopher Perez, Student Activities Coordinator (Office of Student Development) & Theresa Barragan-Echeverria, Counselor (Transfer/Career Center)

Mission: The UndocuAlly Task Force serves to recognize, assess, and implement strategies to assist our undocumented/AB 540 students with their enrollment, persistence, and completion of their academic goals.

Current Activities:

Fall 2020 Meeting Schedule:

  • Biweekly - Wednesdays, 9-10 a.m.
  • Remaining meetings: December 2 and December 16, 2020

Veterans Work Group

Chair: Keith Cobb, Director of Financial Aid

Mission: Develop a comprehensive plan for veteran services at Compton college, including identifying resources, and increasing support for the veteran population on campus, as well as future veteran students.

Current Activities:

  1. All veteran students were emailed and reminded about Winter 2021 registration being open. 
  2. Veterans Resource Center is working closely with the Counseling Department to connect these students with an academic counselor should they need to update their Educational Plans. This partnership has been effective, and students have appreciated being able to have virtual appointments with a counselor in a timely manner. 
  3.  The Veterans Resource Center continues to email all veteran students with lists of local food and housing resources to assist them during this pandemic.
