SEPTEMBER 2019
Thank you to the EOPS/CARE staff for organizing the recent EOPS 50th Anniversary Celebration.
The fall 2019 semester is well underway with mid-term classes beginning in about a month on October 19, 2019. If you know of students who may have an opening in their schedules for an additional course, please encourage them to add a mid-term class. We have one last opportunity to increase fall enrollment!
This year is the 50th Anniversary of the EOPS program. Thank you to all who participated in Compton College's recent celebration of this EOPS program milestone. EOPS/CARE and Compton College's other student support programs serve as a great resource in reinforcing our college mission. For many students, these programs provide the added support that makes attending college possible.
And, in a nod to another important element in the equation for student success -- Compton College's faculty, a fall Faculty Tenure Dinner was held September 25. Four Compton College faculty members who reached this important achievement in their careers were honored at the annual dinner. Click here to view photos from the dinner.
2019-2020 Final Budget Approved by CCCD Board of Trustees
At its regular meeting on September 10, 2019, the Compton Community College District
(CCCD) Board of Trustees approved the 2019-2020 CCCD Final Budget. The 2019-2020 Final
Budget may be viewed online: www.compton.edu/district/district_budget/docs/CCCD-Final-Budget_2019-2020.pdf.
The budget is based upon the information currently available from the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office. The 2019-2020 CCCD Final Budget was developed to achieve a goal of 5,980 Full-Time Equivalent Students (FTES). Compton College will offer 1,335 course sections to meet this FTES goal.
The 2019-2020 Compton District Final Budget includes a Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) of 3.26%; filling seventeen faculty positions, four classified positions, and three management positions; future funding for the Compton College Enterprise Resource Planning system cost of $2,500,000; future funding for the Compton College Fire Academy of $350,000; and the future cost associated with the Compton District Personnel Commission of $300,000.
Finally, the 2019-2020 Compton District Final Budget includes the following expenses to address Compton District's long-term liabilities: Other Post-Employment Benefits (OPEB) payment of $1,250,000; California Public Entity Pension Stabilization Fund State Teachers' Retirement (STRS)/Public Employees' Retirement (PERS) fund payment of $1,000,000 to address future STRS/PERS obligations; and the line of credit repayment of $1,181,841. The proposed 2019-2020 Compton District Final Budget maintains a reserve above the minimum 10% level as required by Compton Community College District Board Policy 6200.
Enrollment Management Update
For the 2019-2020 fiscal year, the Compton College Full-Time Equivalent Students (FTES)
goal is 5,980. However, with the implementation of the Student-Centered Funding Formula, pg. 82-83 and the transition from the El Camino Community College District, Compton College
is being held harmless for decreasing FTES. Funding for the 2019-2020 year will be
the 5,980 FTES amount plus the cost-of-living adjustment identified in the annual
Budget Act, or adjusted for increases to FTES if achieved.
The Compton College Five -Year FTES projections have been updated. In addition, we will continue the development of the 2019-2022 Compton College Enrollment Management Plan, which will be linked to Compton College 2024 and the California Community Colleges Vision for Success report. The 2019-2022 Compton College Enrollment Management Plan will be completed sometime in fall 2019.

CCCD Community Meeting Scheduled for October 7
The Compton Community College District will hold a Community Meeting on Monday, October
7, 2019 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Willowbrook Library, located at 11737 Wilmington Ave.,
Los Angeles, CA 90059.
CCCD Board of Trustees Member Barbara Jean Calhoun will host the meeting and topics to be covered include updates on accreditation, facilities, fall 2019 enrollment at Compton College, and community participation in governance opportunities. The presentation will be followed by a question and answer session.
"I am excited for this opportunity for community members to participate in a discussion about Compton College," said Calhoun. "We hope members of the local community attend this meeting to learn about all of the programs and services available at Compton College for students of all ages."
CCCD Citizens' Bond Oversight Committee Members Appointed
The Compton Community College District (CCCD) Board of Trustees recently appointed
five community members to serve on the Citizens' Bond Oversight Committee. The new
committee members are Danielle Daniels, Rodney Lister, Mayra Flor Martinez, Jacqueline
Olazaba, and Juanita Wright. These five new committee members will join the five currently
serving members: CCCD Vice President of Administrative Services Steve Haigler, Elizabeth
Atkinson, Adele Johnson, Irene Shandell-Taylor (Vice-Chairperson), and Marjorie Shipp.

Oliver W. Conner College Promise Program Recruitment
For the fall 2019 semester, Compton College recruited 174 students for its second
cohort of the College Promise Program. Of these, 113 students are from the Compton
Unified School District, 50 from the Lynwood Unified School District, and 11 from
the Paramount Unified School District. As part of the program, these students will
have their enrollment fees waived for two years of attendance at Compton College.
Student Residential Housing Project
The Compton Community College District has partnered with CivicSpark to assist the
District with its student housing project for Compton College. CivicSpark is a California Governor's
Initiative AmeriCorps program dedicated to building capacity for local public agencies
to address community resilience issues such as climate change, water resource management,
housing, and mobility. Compton College will host Rosa Maldonado, a CivicSpark Fellow,
for one service year (September 3, 2019 through July 31, 2020).
Rosa Maldonado received a bachelor's degree in ethnic studies from California State University, Northridge. She recently worked as a research assistant intern in the Law Library at the Library of Congress. She was in charge of the western hemisphere, where she conducted national and international outreach focused on indigenous populations. She also had a discussion with organizers and representatives from these countries, which is where her interest in working with marginalized communities was sparked.
The CivicSpark Fellow's focus at Compton College will be research to provide a better understanding of student housing for college students.
Rosa's work will focus on:
- Coordinating efforts with the Gensler team
- Developing implementation strategies
- Identifying potential partners
- Hosting community meetings and forums
- Hosting meetings and forums with students
- Showcasing opportunity at local and state levels
Weight Room Usage
The Compton College weight room is available for use by Compton College employees
during the fall 2019 semester during the following days/times:
Monday through Thursday: 12:30 - 2:00 p.m.
Friday: 3:00 - 4:30 p.m.
The Compton College weight room should only be utilized by employees during non-work hours. Employees must complete and submit a Compton Community College District waiver to Jaime Castillo, Athletic Coordinator, before utilizing the facility. The waiver will be valid for the 2019-2020 year. Last year, a few Compton CCD employees asked me what books I am reading, so I decided
to periodically share, via this newsletter, my reading list. This fall I am reading

The fall 2019 semester has begun with a quick and amazing start! I thank all of those involved in ensuring we had a great start to the semester. There is much to do as we navigate some of the challenges and important work to be completed during this period of Compton College's transition as an independent institution. In addition, we must remain ever diligent in our quest to make Every Student a Success Story.
