President/CEO Message

September 13, 2021

I could not sleep this weekend because of significant facilities concerns regarding the new Physical Education Complex Replacement project. The September 2021 President/CEO's Board Letter included a letter from Linda Owens, Chief Facilities Officer, regarding Compton College and Compton Community College District Construction Projects, including the Physical Education Complex Replacement project. This afternoon, we submitted the design drawings for this project to the Division of the State Architect for their review and approval. Unfortunately, we have an estimated $5.2 million problem. The soil under the current athletics area has a high liquefaction potential in case of an earthquake. The new Physical Education Complex Replacement project requires soil mitigation redesign work to protect the new structure. The change in scope must go back to the California State Department of Finance for their review and approval. In the coming weeks, we will submit a request to the state of California for additional funding in the 2022-2023 year for this project. At the same time, we will review our Measure C Bond funds for potential savings in other projects to support the Physical Education Complex Replacement project. The Physical Education Complex Replacement project budget is currently $45.6 million; however, the budget will be revised to include the $5.2 million change in scope.

Final Thoughts

As mentioned in the President/CEO Message - September 13, 2021, last week, Lauren Sosenko, Director of Institutional Effectiveness, developed a survey to collect information from employees regarding classes students are interested in that are not being offered at Compton College for a particular term. The draft survey is available here. If you have any corrections or additions to the survey, please forward those recommendations to Lauren Sosenko at lsosenko@compton.edu by Friday, September 17, 2021.
