President/CEO Message
November 25, 2020
Campus Community,
As mentioned in the President/CEO Message - July 13, 2020, President/CEO Message - October 1, 2020, President/CEO Message - November 12, 2020, President/CEO Message - November 23, 2020, which I provided an update on the Compton Tartars Athletics Program, and I shared their "Resocialization Plan," which is available here. Included in the plan is a budget request of $191,046. I was waiting for the South Coast Conference presidents' meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, December 2, 2020, to discuss spring 2021 athletics before making a formal decision. However, after yesterday's Tartar Talks and listening to the feedback from the discussion on athletics, I wanted the campus community to know that on Wednesday, December 2, 2020, I will be informing the South Coast Conference presidents and the California Community College Athletics Association that Compton College would be opting out of offering athletics in spring 2021.
This was a difficult decision. My number one priority for 2020-2021 regarding COVID-19 is to ensure faculty, staff, and students are in a safe and healthy environment. By making this decision now, we can assist our student-athletes if they are interested in transferring to another institution to participate in spring 2021 athletics. Furthermore, with the savings from not offering athletics in spring 2021, we will explore the implementation of an Esports program. If approved by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, we will provide intramural sports.
We will be sending a communication to students and meeting with staff in the athletics department to discuss this decision and the next steps.
Sincerely,
Keith Curry, Ed.D.
