Message from the PRESIDENT/CEO
May 29, 2020
Campus Community,
Two weeks from today, on Friday, June 12, 2020, at 11:00 a.m., we will celebrate Compton College's first Commencement since the separation from El Camino Community College District. I am excited to celebrate with the Compton Community College District Board of Trustees, faculty, Classified staff, managers/supervisors, and with our graduates. The President/CEO Message - May 29, 2020, includes COVID-19 information and other campus-related updates.
Compton College COVID-19 Update - May 29, 2020
As of May 28, 2020, there are a total of 103,886 positive cases and 4,068 deaths in
California. For more information, go to www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/Pages/Immunization/ncov2019. Compton College continues to operate at Level Four - Severe Infection Rate, according to the Compton CCD Pandemic Outbreak - Emergency Operations Plan.
President/CEO Virtual Student Forum
Yesterday's President/CEO Virtual Student Forum was well attended. Many students provided
their thank you to the college for the support they are receiving, including free
meals and laptops, and the recent distribution of CARES Act and Edquity emergency
grants. However, some students were still concerned that they were not able to communicate
with their faculty members outside classroom hours. I referred them to the webpage
Spring 2020/COVID-19 Student Information webpage where all emails are posted, including the May 4, 2020 email that included information on how to connect with their Guided Pathway Division deans.
The forum was recorded and is available here.
California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Update
Earlier this morning, the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA)
Board of Directors, which I serve as the Chair, met and began to discuss the status
of fall sports, given all of the uncertainty that we are working through related to
COVID-19. Another CCCAA Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for Friday, June 5, 2020, at 1:00 p.m., and this topic will continue to be discussed. Today, the CCCAA Board
of Directors voted in support of community college athletics and the possibility of
hosting athletics competitions in the fall and throughout the 2020-2021 academic year.
Furthermore, the CCCAA Board of Directors established guiding principles to help direct
the organization as we support community college athletics. In the coming weeks, Andree
Pacheco, Director of Student Development and Athletics, working with our instructional
deans, athletic coaches, and the pandemic coordinators, will revise the Compton College
Athletics Return to Campus Recommendations.

Summer Enrollment Update
Registration for summer 2020 began on May 26, 2020, and the summer 2020 Class Schedule PDF is available here. As of today, May 29, 2020, Compton College has generated 281 Full-Time Equivalent Students (FTES) for summer
2020. Our fill rate is at 33%, and our seats filled is 1,930. The Compton College
Summer 2020 Enrollment Snapshot – May 29, 2020, is available here. After three days of registration activity, 21 of the classes are already full. Please
encourage your current Compton College students to register now for summer 2020. The
first six-week and eight-week summer sessions begin on Monday, June 22, 2020.
Educational Partnership
Each month, Compton College hosts separate meetings with our partners from Compton,
Lynwood, and Paramount unified school districts. The purpose of these meetings is
to provide updates, discuss dual Enrollment between our districts, and explore new
opportunities to expand our enrollment activities. Yesterday I had the opportunity
to facilitate our monthly meeting with Compton Unified School District. While reviewing
the summer and fall schedules, I noticed we are offering over 23 sections during the
summer term at their high school sites, including our Early College High School. We
are also offering 28 sections during the fall semester through our AB 288 agreements
at their high school sites, at the Early College High School, and through our Afternoon
College Program.
As I reflect on the number of course offerings, I must remind myself that our partnerships with our local K-12 districts have been expanding since I arrived at Compton College in the summer of 2005. On Monday, June 1, 2020, three Dual Enrollment Specialists will begin their employment at Compton College. The Dual Enrollment Specialist positions are funded by grants from the College Futures Foundation, the Pritzker Foster Care Initiative Grant, and a contract with Compton Unified School District. These three positions will be assigned to Compton, Lynwood, and Paramount unified school districts to assist with dual enrollment services.
In my President/CEO Message - May 18, 2020, I mentioned how during these times, we must remain committed to our dual enrollment programs and assist our local high school students in preparing for college and beyond. Dual Enrollment is a critical strategy in Compton College 2024 and the 2024 Enrollment Management Plan.
Third Annual Classified Professional Development Day
The spring 2020 Classified Professional Development Day is scheduled for Thursday, June 4, 2020, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. via Zoom. All Classified staff is encouraged to participate
in all the activities.
Final Thoughts
As we continue to move Compton College toward 2024, the deaths of George Floyd and
Ahmaud Arbery cannot be ignored. As an institution of higher learning, we have to
stay committed to our mission statement. We are committed to enhancing the student success of our diverse community. We also
must remain committed to our students by protecting, honoring, and maintaining the
integrity of their lives. As a community college, we cannot operate in a vacuum and
ignore what is happening in this nation, as many people are hurting.
I hope that Compton College can be a positive influence on males of color, especially black men. Through our Males of Color Taskforce, we can continue to create pathways forward for males of color on our campus. I want to encourage each of us to connect with one another, and to remind ourselves that the work we are doing is for the betterment of our college, our community, and our nation.
