Message from the PRESIDENT/CEO

MAY 2019

With only two weeks until the end of the 2018-2019 academic year, Compton College has a full schedule of activities and events, culminating with the 2019 Commencement Ceremony. The Compton College Commencement Ceremony is scheduled for June 6, 2019, at 5:30 p.m., in the Football/Soccer Stadium. The keynote speaker for this year's ceremony is Compton College alumnus and Founder, Chairman and CEO of Operation HOPE, Inc. John Hope Bryant. This will be the second Compton College Commencement Ceremony since receiving initial accreditation from the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges on June 7, 2017.

Other upcoming events include the Compton College/El Camino College Partnership Celebration on May 30 from 1-3 p.m., and the spring 2019 Nursing Pinning Ceremony on June 4 from 6-8 p.m. Both of these events will take place in the Gymnasium.

On June 19, 2019, Compton District Board of Trustee Member, Barbara Calhoun will host a Community Meeting from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the AC Bilbrew Library, located at 150 E. El Segundo Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90061. Topics for this community meeting include Accreditation, Facilities Update, Community Participation in Governance Opportunities, and Compton College Summer/Fall 2019 Enrollment.

Finally, the Grand Opening Ceremony for the Police Service Building is scheduled for July 16, 2019 at 3:00 p.m.

Accreditation Update

Implementation continues on the items cited in the plans section of the ECC Compton Center Self-Evaluation Report and the recommendations for improvement cited in the External Evaluation Report. The status of the plans section and recommendations for improvement are detailed in the Compton College Institutional Self-Evaluation Action Items document. Work also continues on implementation of the projects associated with the Compton College Quality Focused Essay-Special Report that was submitted to the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) on November 22, 2017. The Commission acted to accept the Quality Focus Essay-Special Report at its meeting on January 10-12, 2018.

The Accreditation and the Process Forward document has been updated. This document is Compton College's Transition Planning Document and it includes accomplishments completed since the inception of the partnership, as well as the accreditation and transition planning moving forward. The next Accreditation Steering Committee meeting is scheduled for June 19, 2019, from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Compton College Board Room. Our goal is to follow the established timeline for submitting the Mid-Term Report to the ACCJC prior to the March 15, 2021 deadline.

El Camino College/Compton College Transition

The El Camino College/Compton College Transition Committee has been working together on implementing items cited in the Partnership Transition Plan, which is the internal planning document for the El Camino College/Compton College Transition. The next and final El Camino College/Compton College Transition committee meeting is scheduled for June 4, 2019, at 2:30 p.m. in the Compton College Board Room.

The Compton College CCCApply Application and the Compton College Ellucian Banner Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system went live in January 2019 and February 2019 respectively. The Compton College summer 2019 searchable schedule is available online here. The new MyCompton portal went live on May 6, 2019. Online registration for summer 2019 began on May 14, 2019. Fall 2019 registration begins on May 28, 2019.

The CCCD submitted a request to the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office to modify the transition budget by reducing the budget for Compton College's staffing for the Information Technology Department and increasing the budget to cover the additional ERP cost. The California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office has since approved the request. The updated Compton College Ellucian Banner ERP system implementation timeline is available here.

The 2019-2020 Catalog is nearly complete and our goal is to publish the PDF by May 28, 2019 to align with fall 2019 registration. A draft version of the catalog was submitted with the Compton College application for California Veterans approval on May 20, 2019.

Guided Pathways Implementation

Compton College has adopted the Completion by Design (also referred to as the "Tartar Completion by Design") framework to guide the college's priorities, decision-making, and evaluations. This framework reflects the students' postsecondary journey using the concepts of Connection, Entry, Progress, Completion, and Transition. Included in the Tartar Completion by Design framework is the implementation of Guided Pathways, which is being coordinated at Compton College by the Tartar Focused & Directed Pathways to Completion Committee. Guided Pathways has four main goals, also referred to as the Four Pillars of Guided Pathways:

  • Create clear curricular pathways to employment and further education.
  • Help students choose and enter their pathway.
  • Help students stay on their path.
  • Ensure learning is happening with intentional outcomes.

This spring semester, Compton College developed Guided Pathway Divisions to support students' early academic exploration in broad areas of interest for fall 2019. The Guided Pathways Divisions involve an entire program of courses that happen to overlap or intersect with similar disciplines, ideally allowing students to take classes that will count towards their degree or certificate before they have decided on a specific course of study to pursue. Elections were recently conducted to select Division Chairs for the Compton College Guided Pathway Divisions and their term begins July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2022. The Guided Pathway Divisions and Chairs are:

  • Business and Industrial Studies - Abdirashid Yahye
  • Fine Arts, Communication, and Humanities - Dr. Valerie Woodward
  • Health/Public Services - Dr. Shirley Thomas
  • Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) - Dr. Donald Roach
  • Social Sciences - Dr. Paul Flor

To help support the Guided Pathway Divisions, Compton College is establishing Tartar Success Teams that will support each of the Guided Pathway Divisions. The Tartar Success Teams will include the following:

  • Academic Dean
  • Division Chair
  • Faculty (by discipline within a Guided Pathways Division)
  • Guided Pathways Counselor
  • Academic Counselor
  • Instructional Coordinator
  • Student Services Advisor
  • Student Support Services (EOPS/CARE, CalWORKs, Special Resource Center,
    Health Center, Financial Aid, and Admissions & Records)
  • Student Success Center
  • Strong Workforce/Adult Education
  • Research & Planning
  • Professional Development Faculty Leads

Compton College faculty, classified professionals, administrators, and students helped develop the Guided Pathway Division structure and assisted with the development of the roles and responsibilities for each member of the Success Teams. The overall goal for Compton College Guided Pathways implementation is to improve our student completion and success rates by 2023-2024.

Enrollment Management Update

Over the past several years, enrollment at Compton College has been declining. For the 2018-2019 fiscal year, Compton College Full-Time Equivalent Students (FTES) goal is 5,980. We will not meet our enrollment goal as shown in the Five-Year FTES projections. However, with the implementation of the Student-Centered Funding Formula, pg. 82-83 and the transition from El Camino Community College District, Compton College funding for the 2018-2019 year will be the 5,980 FTES amount plus the cost-of-living adjustment identified in the annual Budget Act and adjusted for increases to FTES.

Enrollment and registration for summer 2019 at Compton College began on May 14, 2019. Compton College will continue to monitor its Five-Year FTES projections and continue the development of the 2019-2022 Compton College Enrollment Management Plan, which will be linked to the Institution-Set Standards and the Foundation for California Community Colleges Vision for Success report. The 2019-2022 Compton College Enrollment Management Plan will be completed sometime in the summer of 2019.

2017-2018 Compton College Fact Book Highlights

Each month, Compton College will continue to highlight new information from the 2017-2018 Fact Book. For the month of May 2019, Compton College is a majority Latinx-serving institution, with 60% of the student population identifying as Latinx. However, when looking at the youngest age categories (19 or less), that percentage jumped to 73%. This majority shifts with the college's older student population: 54% of the 45-54 age group, 67% of the 55+ and older groups are black/African American (page 8). The same trend, albeit not quite as dramatic, is apparent in staffing at Compton College. Forty-four percent of the youngest employees at 18-34-year-old (the largest group) are Latinx, while 55% of the age 55-64 and 47% of 65+ aged employees are black/African American (page 43).

Compton College #RealCollege Survey Results

In March 2019, the California Community College #RealCollege Survey Report was released by the Hope Center for College, Community, and Justice at Temple University and the California Community College Chancellor's Office. A total of 436 Compton College students participated in this survey, and below are the results for Compton College as compared to the statewide averages:

Over the next few months, the Tartar Support Network will review and discuss the Compton College #RealCollege Survey Results and provide additional recommendations on how Compton College can address its students' housing and food insecurities.

Compton College Staffing

Compton College is in the process of hiring several faculty, staff, police officers, and management positions. The following is an update on Compton College hiring. Nine faculty positions were advertised for the 2019-2020 year. Eight of the nine positions closed March 28, 2019. The positions were:

  • Automotive Technology
  • Counselor/Articulation Officer
  • English as a Second Language (ESL)
  • EOPS/CARE Guided Pathways Counselor (2 Positions)
  • Guided Pathways Counselor (5 Positions)
  • Psychology
  • Special Resource Center (SRC) Guided Pathways Counselor (2 Positions)
  • Sociology

The ninth position was for three positions in Nursing. Since we experienced difficulty obtaining a substantial pool for this position, it was advertised as open until filled. To date, all of the screening committees have held their first meetings with the exception of the Nursing position. Currently, nine individuals have applied for the Nursing position and we are now able to move forward with the screening process for this position. The goal is to have all first-round interviews completed by June 27, 2019, and all final interviews completed by July 24, 2019.

The following ten classified positions were filled during the month of April 2019:

  • Financial Aid Coordinator
  • Helpdesk Supervisor
  • Permanent Part-Time Cosmetology Assistant
  • Permanent Part-Time Pre-School Teacher
  • Vocational Tool Room Attendant
  • Painter
  • Research Analyst
  • Senior Administrative Assistant
  • Utility Maintenance Worker (2)

We anticipate completing the hiring process for the following classified positions by May 31, 2019:

  • Athletic Coordinator
  • Job Placement Specialist
  • Police Dispatcher

We anticipate completing the hiring for the Instructional Division Coordinator position, which is also a classified position by June 18, 2019. Compton College will continue to recruit for the following classified positions:

  • Athletic Specialist
  • Associate Registrar
  • Learning Management Systems
  • Student Services Advisor

The Compton District Police Department recruitment plan is as follows. The intent is to hire two police sergeants, seven police officers, and two clerk dispatchers. Four applicants are currently undergoing background checks, polygraph examination and psychological assessment for the police sergeant position. Once this process is completed, suitable candidates will be interviewed. Five applicants are undergoing the above process for the police officer position. Once this process has been completed suitable candidates will be interviewed. Compton College will continue to advertise for the police officer position because the existing pool of applicants is insufficient to staff the targeted seven police officer positions.

Three management positions were filled during the month of April 2019, including the Dean of Counseling and Guided Pathways; Associate Dean of Nursing; and the Director of Student Development and Athletics. In May 2019, Compton College filled the Dean of Student Success position. The Director CalWORKs/TANF/GAIN/Special Resource Center position has been difficult to fill at Compton College. It has been determined that it would be best to separate this position into two distinct positions, the Director of CalWORKs/TANF/GAIN and the Director of the Special Resource Center. These new positions were approved by the  Compton Community College District Board of Trustees Agenda on May 20, 2019. Recruitment is in progress for the following management positions:

  • Dean of Student Learning (closes on June 6, 2019)
  • Director of CalWORKs/TANF/GAIN (closes on July 8, 2019)
  • Director, Child Development Center (closes on July 8, 2019)
  • Director of the Special Resource Center (closes on July 8, 2019)
  • Director of Diversity, Compliance, and Title IX (closes June 3, 2019)
  • Professional Development Manager (closes June 3, 2019)
  • System and Network Support Manager (closes June 3, 2019)

Classified Professional Development Day

Thank you to those who participated in the 2nd Annual Classified Professional Development Day - "Bridging the Gap." It was a wonderful event, and I enjoyed seeing everyone participate in the activities. Special thanks to the Human Resources Department and the planning committee for an outstanding job. Please mark your calendar for the 3rd Annual Classified Professional Development Day, which is scheduled for May 15, 2020. Furthermore, during the 2019-2020 year, we will also implement a Classified Professional Development Week. The transition of the Compton Community College District website being merged with the Compton College website has been completed. The District website is now available at www.compton.edu/district/. The District and College now share one URL: www.compton.edu. The Compton College website includes a link to the District pages from the footer of the homepage as well as from the "About Us" pull-down menu at the top.
