As of May 3, 2020, there are a total of 54,937 positive cases and 2,254 deaths in California. For more information, go to https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/Pages/Immunization/ncov2019.aspx. Compton College remains operating at Level Four - Severe Infection Rate, according to the Compton CCD Pandemic Outbreak - Emergency Operations Plan. The Compton College Pandemic Coordinators and members of the President/CEO Cabinet met this week, and below are current updates.
Pass/No Pass Option
As mentioned in the Compton College COVID-19 Updates - April 27, 2020, I received the Academic Senate of Compton College Resolution for Pass/No Pass Grading Option at Compton College. Consistent with the Resolution and California Community College Chancellors Office Executive Order 2020-02 - Temporary Suspension of Various Specified Grade-Related Regulations to Address the Continuity of Education in Community Colleges During the COVID-19 Declared State of Emergency, Compton College will provide the Pass/No Pass Grading Option for all spring 2020 and summer 2020 courses. Students have until Friday, June 5, 2020, to select the Pass/No Pass Option for spring 2020. The Step-by-Step Instructions on how a student can choose the Pass/No Pass Option for each of their classes is available here. Students are strongly encouraged to speak with a Compton College counselor to discuss the implications for taking a course Pass/No Pass and the effect it may have on their academic standing, financial aid, admission, and transfer to a CSU, UC, or private university.
Free Wi-Fi Hotspots Available to Current Spring 2020 Compton College Students
As of today, the College has received nearly 300 student-requests for Wi-Fi hotspots. The free hotspots are available on a first-come-first-served basis, to students who are currently enrolled in spring 2020 courses at Compton College and sign up online for the Wi-Fi Loan Program. Please share this message with students and inform them to read all instructions included in the online RSVP form carefully. Email firstname.lastname@example.org if you have questions.
Multiple email communications will be sent to students this week, to their @compton.edu email accounts. Topics include: how to identify the correct dean for their course(s) in case they are unable to reach their instructor; Pass/No Pass (P/NP) grading option; Emergency Withdrawal (EW) information; refunds; and the second virtual student forum, scheduled for Thursday, May 28, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. The emails will be posted on the COVID-19 webpage as PDFs.
All Compton College faculty are asked to hold their regularly scheduled office hours and to make sure students have the best contact information for each course and instructor.
Compton College Pandemic Coordinators Meeting
The Compton College Pandemic Coordinators meet twice a week to discuss our current operating level and provide recommendations to the President/CEO. We would like you to join them on Thursday, May 21, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. to receive an update on Compton College's COVID-19 status and to discuss the reopening plan for the College. If you are interested in participating in the meeting, please email Heather Parnock at email@example.com to receive the Zoom meeting information.
Student Laptop Loan Program
Just a friendly reminder, laptop computers are still available to students who submit a Student Laptop Loan Program RSVP and are currently enrolled in spring 2020 courses at Compton College. We are now mailing laptops to students' homes. If you have any questions about the laptop computer loan program, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Eventual Return to Campus Plan
As mentioned in the Compton College COVID-19 Updates - April 27, 2020, I have asked the Pandemic Coordinators to draft the plan for our Eventual Return to Campus Plan, and the plan will be shared with the Health, Safety, and Parking Committee, the Compton College Academic Senate, and with the Consultative Council for feedback. If you have any recommendations or suggestions regarding the plan, please share it with your immediate supervisor. There are a lot of unknown questions regarding the Eventual Return to Campus Plan, and your creative input would be beneficial.
2020-2021 Compton College Goals
The 2020-2021 Compton College Goals are available here. The 2020-2021 Compton College Goals were reviewed and vetted with faculty, staff, and administrators participating in the Core Planning Team workgroup, Consultative Council, the Planning and Budget Committee, and the Chief Facilities Officer. The 2020-2021 Compton College Goals were reviewed and approved by the Compton CCD Board of Trustees at their April 21, 2020, board meeting.
Five-Year FTES Projections
The Five -Year FTES projections have been updated for Compton College, and we are currently finalizing the 2024 Compton College Enrollment Management Plan. Our goal is to present for first reading the 2024 Compton College Enrollment Management Plan to the Compton CCD Board of Trustees at their Tuesday, May 19, 2020, board meeting.
In our recent 2019-2020 Apportionment Attendance Report for the second period, we reported our projected FTES for the 2019-2020 year as 4,294.07. For 2018-2019, we reported 4,494.19 FTES. However, with COVID-19, I am incredibly concerned about enrollment for summer 2020 and fall 2020. We will be increasing our marketing efforts for summer 2020 and fall 2020, including mailing the summer 2020 and fall 2020 class schedules to all Compton CCD residents.
Thank you, and please be safe.
