President/CEO Virtual Student Forum
Yesterday's President/CEO Virtual Student Forum went very well. Many students provided their thank you to the college for the smooth transition to alternative academic instruction and online student support services. However, many students were concerned that they were not able to communicate with their faculty members. I promised the students an email communication would be sent to their @compton.edu account with information on what to do if they are unable to reach their instructor. The email will be sent on Monday, May 4, 2020.

Also, students were very supportive of the basic needs assistance we are providing during this time. They were very appreciative of the Compton College + Everytable Meal Delivery Program, the Student Laptop Loan Program, and the Wi-Fi Loan Program. The next Virtual Student Forum is scheduled for Thursday, May 28, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. Students will have the opportunity to join via Zoom and ask me questions. Student login information is available here.

Final Thoughts
Beginning next week, my updates on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday will focus on the progress we are making as a college and will include an update on COVID-19. We are doing some fantastic work, so much that one email communication would not be enough. Next week, I will provide an update on the implementation of Guided Pathways at Compton College. I want to thank everyone who was involved in the planning of the Guided Pathways Professional Development event that was held today. I was extremely proud that over 80 Compton College faculty, staff, and students participated in the event, with the conversation focusing on student success.

In April of 2011, David Simmons, our help desk supervisor, came to visit me during my first office hours as the interim CEO. During his visit, he asked what was going to be my legacy at Compton College. At first, I was stunned by his question, and I told him my legacy would include independent accreditation for the college and opening the Learning Resource Center (now called the Library-Student Success Center). Over the years, I have continued to ask myself the same question, and for the last four years, my answer has been student success. We all play a critical role in our students' success, and now more than ever, they need our support from words of encouragement and general guidance to listening to their concerns. In my professional career, COVID-19 has been one of the most challenging hurdles we have faced as a college. However, each day I think about how we are helping our students, and how we will persevere. This weekend, when you have a moment, think about your legacy at Compton College. But most importantly, think about your students and their success stories.

Please be safe and have a wonderful weekend.
