Message from the PRESIDENT/CEO

Campus Community,

I want to provide you with an update on Compton College in terms of COVID-19. The Compton CCD Pandemic Outbreak - Emergency Operations Plan guides our response to the possible scenarios that may occur as the COVID-19 situation progresses. As of March 24, 2020, 2:00 p.m. Pacific Time, the California Department of Health reports there are a total of 2,535 positive cases and 40 deaths in California (including one non-California resident). Compton CCD is currently operating at Level Three - Moderate Infection Rate. Recent confirmed case(s) of a community member, and/or family member of student, staff, or faculty within the county. Today marked the fourth-day of alternative academic instruction and online student support services. The Compton College Pandemic Coordinators and members of the President/CEO Cabinet met today, and below are some updates:

  1. As of today, we only have three classes (Law 104, PHIL 101, and PE 165) that have not moved to alternative academic instruction. However, Barbara Perez, Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs, is working with the Instructional Deans, and their Division Chairs to move those three courses to alternative academic instruction. This is amazing! Special thanks to all those involved, including Barbara Perez, Jasmine Phillips, Alister Caddy, the Canvas Faculty Trainers, the Instructional Deans, the Division Chairs, and most importantly, the Compton College faculty.

    And a sincere thank you to the Student Services Division, under the direction of Elizabeth Martinez, Vice President of Student Services, for successfully moving all of our student support services online. Also, special thanks to Dr. Cesar Jimenez, Carlos Maruri, Citlali Gonzales, David Turcotte, for providing the necessary training on Cranium Cafe, CRM Advise, and DegreeWorks to faculty and Classified staff.   2. Today, I approved the development of an online Compton College Employee Directory. The Information Technology Services, Community Relations, and Human Resources departments are working together to create an online directory of faculty, Classified staff and managers' names, emails, and extensions. The creation of the Compton College Employee Directory ties into the "Connection" aspect of the Tartar Completion by Design framework by providing students, visitors, and the College community a comprehensive and accurate online resource for communication. Human Resources' onboarding process for new employees will include the updating of Active Directory with the Informational Technology Services Department. The goal is to have the Compton College Employee Directory live by Wednesday, April 1, 2020.

  3. The Compton College Student Laptop Loan Program begins next week! Laptops are available on a first-come-first-served basis to students who submit a Student Laptop Loan Program RSVP and are currently enrolled in spring 2020 courses at Compton College. The laptop loan distribution will begin on Monday, March 30, 2020. In total, this semester, we will distribute 725 laptop computers to Compton College students. As of 7:00 p.m. this evening, we have already received 203 online RSVPs from Compton College students.

    Please note, only students who complete the RSVP and receive an email confirmation with instructions for pick-up will be allowed on campus. Please help us promote the RSVP process to limit the number of people on campus and comply with social distancing protocol. Campus police will monitor the campus entrance. If you have any questions, please email your questions to studentlife@compton.edu.

  4. Students and employees are not allowed on campus through Friday, April 17, 2020. Only critical personnel necessary for essential functions will be allowed on campus. Last Friday, senior management communicated with the required employees about their schedules and duties for Monday, March 23, 2020, through  Friday, April 17, 2020. Campus Police will only allow the individuals on the schedule on campus, and the schedule is available here.  Please note, for those employees authorized to be on campus, the campus closes at 4:30 p.m. On Wednesdays, only Maintenance & Operations staff are allowed on campus past 4:30 p.m., with the last shift ending at 6:30 p.m.

  5. Today, I have asked the Pandemic Coordinators and members of the President/CEO Cabinet to monitor federal and state guidelines as it relates to alternative academic instruction and online student support services and the potential extension of the timeline past Friday, April 17, 2020, for telecommuting. I will make a final decision as it relates to a potential extension by Friday, April 10, 2020.

  6. As mentioned yesterday, it is more critical than ever that we update and maintain our programs/departments/divisions webpages. The new Guided Pathway Division webpages will go live by Wednesday, April 1, 2020. Heather Parnock, director of Community Relations, will be working on connecting the current academic webpages to the five Guided Pathway Division webpages.

  7. The Pandemic Coordinators began working on the Compton College FEMA's Public Assistance Program Application, which is due by Wednesday, April 8, 2020, and exploring all options for federal reimbursements for the implementation of the Compton CCD Pandemic Outbreak - Emergency Operations Plan.

The Community Relations Department has developed an Alternative Instruction FAQ webpage for Compton College students, which is available here. If you are experiencing distress or anxiety due to the current circumstances, please contact the Employee Assistance Program at (800) 531-0200. We will continue to work through many issues and concerns as it relates to COVID-19.

Final Thoughts
I am very impressed with our accomplishments over the past couple of years. However, over these last two weeks, everyone has stepped up, making sure we will have a better organization to serve our students. The future of higher education has changed when we talk about student success and basic student needs. It is not just talking about housing and food insecurity, and transportation; it now includes technology. We need to make sure we are placing technology in the hands of our students, as well as providing them with 24-hour technical support.

Finally, this afternoon I did an interview with the Community College Journal on "The Care and Keeping of a Leader." The reporter asked how do I, as a college president, take care of myself during these times. As I mentioned to the reporter, I try to exercise as often as possible at home, and I try to read non-higher-education-related books. It is imperative during these times we take care of ourselves. For those employees working remotely, please make sure to take breaks throughout the day.
