President/CEO Message

Campus Community,

Over the past couple of days, I participated in the Achieving the Dream (ATD) Virtual Kickoff Institute. I learned a lot about ATD and even more about the transformation that is happening at many community colleges in this country. As I reflect on the ATD Virtual Kickoff Institute activities, I think about the many projects we are currently working on at Compton College in support of student success. We have organized ourselves to ensure we stay focused on implementing the goals and objectives highlighted in Compton College 2024, 2024 Human Resources Staffing Plan, 2024 Technology Plan, and 2024 Enrollment Management Plan. During the 2020-2021 year, one of my goals as the President/CEO is to ensure these plans are being implemented and incorporated into all the work we do as an organization.

As I mentioned in the President/CEO Message - June 22, 2020, we cannot lose sight of the activities described in the Integrated Planning Plan (IEPI Planning), Integrated Planning Plan (IEPI Distance Education), Accreditation Action Plan from our March 2017 accreditation visit, and our Quality Focus Essay Action Plan. It is critical all employees read the 2024 plans and related documents, and regularly discuss them during program, department, and division meetings. Compton College COVID-19 Update
On July 15, 2020, California reported 11,126 new cases of COVID-19. The state now has a total of 347,634 positive cases. There has been a total of 7,227 deaths in the state.  For more information, go to www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/Pages/Immunization/ncov2019. Compton College continues to operate at Level Four - Severe Infection Rate, according to the Compton CCD Pandemic Outbreak - Emergency Operations Plan.

As mentioned in the President/CEO Message - April 1, 2020, below is the communication protocol we have implemented in the event there is additional confirmed COVID-19 case(s):

  • A message from President/CEO to the Compton CCD Board of Trustees
  • A message from the President/CEO to the President of the Academic Senate
  • A message from the President/CEO to the members of our bargaining units
  • A message from President/CEO to those who may have been exposed
  • A message to faculty, Classified Staff, administrators, and students, which is then be placed on our COVID -19 webpage, and shared on social media (Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram)
  • A message from President/CEO to the Chancellor, California Community Colleges

Furthermore, the Vice President of Human Resources also notifies the County of Los Angeles Public Health Department of all confirmed Compton College COVID-19 case(s).

Eventual Return to Campus
Next week, the draft Eventual Return to Campus Plan will be shared with the campus community and the Health, Safety, and Parking Committee. Also, over the next week, we will be examining our telecommuting plan, which is  scheduled through Friday, August 14, 2020Please note the following:

  • Compton College is closed to the public.
  • Only essential personnel are allowed on campus, as scheduled.
  • Alternative academic instruction will continue through fall 2020.
  • For fall 2020, the majority of classes will be offered online. However, we are still working on a plan to offer some of the Career and Technical Education programs on campus.
  • Student services, including counseling, are currently available online at compton.edu/studentservices/.

Essential Employees Work Schedule
The Essential Employees Work Schedule for July 20-23, 2020, is posted online here. The schedule will be updated every Thursday for the following week as employees continue to gradually return to campus.

Enrollment Update
As of today, July 16, 2020, Compton College has generated 639 Full-Time Equivalent Students for fall 2020. Our fill rate is at 21%, and our seats filled is 4.015. Click here for the current fall 2020 Enrollment Snapshot. Please encourage students and prospective students to enroll in the fall 2020 classes.

Achieving the Dream
Compton College has joined Achieving the Dream (ATD), a growing network of more than 220 colleges in 43 states dedicated to improving student success. This week, Compton College, along with four other colleges, participated in the ATD Virtual Kickoff Institute. During the ATD Virtual Kickoff Institute, college teams met virtually with experienced ATD coaches and advisors to initiate a strategy for student success, which will include campus-based Kickoff work in fall 2020. The Compton College ATD coaches are Dr. Chris Hill and Dr. Judy Loveless-Morris. More information on Compton College's participation in Achieving the Dream will be provided at the fall 2020 Professional Development Day Event on Thursday, August 20, 2020, and in future President/CEO – Messages.

Final Thoughts
As outlined in the 2019-2020 Compton College Goals, one of our goals was "Continue to develop and enhance partnerships with schools, colleges, universities, businesses, and community-based organizations to respond to the educational, workforce training, and economic development need." I am proud to announce the following external funding provided to Compton College and Compton Community College District to achieve that goal.

  • $200,000 from the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office through Innovation and Effectiveness Grant to support the Compton College Distance Education Program.
  • $543,500 from the College Futures Foundation to support guided pathways, a community of practice, dual enrollment, opt-out scheduling, block scheduling, and aligned Associate Degree for Transfer pathways.
  • $112,500 from the Kresge Foundation to support Compton College's participation in the ATD for the next three fiscal years.
  • $40,000 from the Pritzker Foster Care Initiative to hire a Dual Enrollment Specialist, and with the support of this grant, promote college enrollment for foster youth in feeder high schools.
  • $303,063 from Apple Inc. Grant to provide a collegiate coding program that starts as noncredit and progresses to a credit-to-career pathway, to serve the greater Los Angeles community as an Apple Consulting Network Training Institute. The grant will help create an innovative learning environment with a dedicated space for coding with Swift at Compton College, where students develop coding skills to prepare for the workforce, entrepreneurship, or a higher level of education at the university.

Over the next couple of months, I will be focused on the reestablishment of the Foundation for Compton Community College District and begin exploring our options for a Compton College five-year fundraising campaign to support student success.
