Message from the PRESIDENT/CEO
Welcome to the spring 2020 semester! This month we celebrate Black History Month with activities and events hosted by the Office of Student Life and Associated Student Body. The spring semester is a very busy time for Compton College as we prepare for our year-end activities.
Some of the upcoming events include the 3rd Annual Retirees' Luncheon is scheduled for March 17, 2020 at noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Staff Lounge; a New Employees Reception is planned for April 21, 2020 at 3 p.m. in the Art Gallery, located in the Library-Student Success Center â€“ all employees are welcome to attend; and, we will celebrate another facilities milestone with a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Student Services Building on May 19, 2020 at 3 p.m. I look forward to seeing you all at these celebratory events!
Compton College is hosting a Job Fair for educators on Saturday, March 14, 2020, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Library-Student Success Center. The Job Fair is free and open to the public.
The Job Fair will provide individuals with an opportunity to explore employment opportunities
and learn more about Compton College, as well as meet with Compton College administrators
and deans. The fair will offer free workshops in resume writing and interview skills.
Applications are being accepted for many full-time positions at Compton College, including:
Faculty: Chemistry, Film/Video-Social Media, HVAC, History, Journalism/English-Social Media, Political Science, Nursing, and Welding

4th Annual Tartar Student Leadership Conference
The fourth annual Tartar Student Leadership Conference is scheduled for Thursday, March 19, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Compton College students will hear from distinguished scholars, entrepreneurs, and community leaders about leadership first hand. The featured speaker for this year's conference is Angelica Salas, executive director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA).
The Tartar Student Leadership Conference is designed to motivate and inspire Compton
College students. All participants will learn strategies to develop their roles as
leaders at Compton College and in their communities. Students are asked to RSVP online
Enrollment Management: Every FTES Counts!
During the past several years, enrollment at Compton College has been declining. For the 2019-2020 fiscal year, the Compton College Full-Time Equivalent Students (FTES) goal is 5,980. However, with the implementation of the Student-Centered Funding Formula, pg. 82-83 and the transition from El Camino Community College District, Compton College is being held harmless for decreasing FTES. Our funding for the 2019-2020 year will be the 5,980 FTES amount plus the cost-of-living adjustment identified in the annual Budget Act, or adjusted for increases to FTES if achieved.
As of February 28, 2020, Compton College has generated 1,758 FTES for spring 2020. Our fill rate is at 72%, and our seats filled is 11,651. The Five -Year FTES projections are updated and we are working on the development of the 2024 Compton College Enrollment Management Plan, which will be linked to our Institution-Set Standards and Goals and the California Community Colleges Vision for Success report.

Institution Set Goals 2020-2021
Compton College has established Institutional-Set Goals to measure its progress toward
its overarching goals and strategic initiatives outlined in the Compton College 2024 plan, and its annual goals for 2019-2020. These Institutional-Set Goals were defined by multiple stakeholders
through Planning Summits in fall 2018 and spring 2019 and refined in the Compton College
2024 plan vetting process. They provide current rates and counts for the measures
and targets to achieve by 2021-2022. These measures are aligned with the California
Community Colleges Vision for Success Initiative. The Compton College Evaluation of Institution Set Goals Spring 2019 document is available online.
Compton College Implementation of Guided Pathways
At Compton College, the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office's Guided Pathways Framework is being led by the Tartar Focused & Directed Pathways to Completion (Guided Pathways) Committee. Our focus is on improving student completion rates at Compton College. Over the past year, several milestones have been completed.
- Compton College established 41 majors and 36 certificate programs. We are creating clear curricular pathways to employment and further education, helping students choose and enter their pathway, ensuring that learning is happening with intentional outcomes, and helping students stay on their path.
- Organized our academic programs into five Guided Pathway Divisions, with a Guided Pathways Counselor, a Division Chair, a Student Services Advisor, and assigned a Dean to provide oversight of each Guided Pathway Division.
- Established Tartar Success Teams for each Guided Pathway Division.
- Held our inaugural Tartar Success Team Institute in August 2019.
- A team visited Georgia State University to learn about their effective Guided Pathway practices.
This spring, our goal is to continue to strengthen the Tartar Success Teams and to ensure academic program maps are developed, approved, and published in the course catalog. Academic program maps will be especially useful for outreach and recruitment, and the development of the schedule of classes. As part of Guided Pathways, Compton College is committed to clarifying the path for its students, including presenting the information in a way that is easy to consume, relevant to the users' needs, and makes the educational programs section of the catalog more student-friendly. The newly developed Academic Program Maps Process and timeline are available online.
What does Guided Pathway mean to students?
Compton College's implementation of Guided Pathways ensures students select a major, are assigned to a Tartar Success Team, referred to academic and student support services in a timely manner, and provide students with an academic program map that outlines the coursework needed for on-time completion.
Compton College's New Student Orientation was redesigned based on the Guided Pathways
framework. Guided Pathways Counselors and Student Services Advisors help new students
connect to Compton College and prepare them for their first semester. Compton College
is exploring how to facilitate career and academic exploration while emphasizing the
importance of early educational planning. Additionally, a key element of Guided Pathways
is helping students stay on their path. The CRM Advise platform allows faculty to
submit an early alert for students who might be struggling with class and submit a
"kudos" for students who are doing well. The early alert system provides interventions
and resources to help students to persist and continue on their path to success.
I recently traveled to Washington, D.C. and Sacramento to represent California community colleges and lobby for important issues related to higher education. The Assembly Bills, Assembly Joint Resolutions, Senate Bills, and Senate Constitutional Amendments listed in my updates here are legislation that the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office and the Community College League of California recommend that community colleges monitor for updates and progress. Also, available online is a re-cap of the Legislative Meetings that took place on January 27, 2020, in Sacramento, CA.

Compton College Collaborative Governance Handbook
During the past year, the Consultative Council and the Collaborative Governance Document Development Committee have worked on the development of the Compton College Collaborative Governance Handbook. The Compton College Collaborative Governance Handbook is available here for your review and feedback. Compton College School Climate Survey and Action Plan
Compton College administered a School Climate survey in spring 2018. From this effort, the College identified several recommendations documented in the attached Compton College School Climate Report and created an Action Plan to address the findings. All of the recommendations are in progress, and their status is described below.
- Developing programs that increase student connection
- Compton College is implementing and evaluating its student connection practices, including First-Year Experience, College Promise, and Tartar Success Teams.
- Implement Guided Pathways
- Compton College has implemented its Guided Pathway Divisions and Tartar Success Teams. We are working on developing Academic Program Maps and professional development for all faculty and staff in 2020. In addition, Compton College is applying to be an Achieving the Dream school to support this transformative change.
- Maintain improved physical status of the campus
- The President/CEO and the Chief Facilities Officer constantly assess the physical status of the campus. In addition, new construction is moving forward across the campus.
- Safety planning
- Campus Police has adjusted campus lighting and created a better line of sight across the campus. They also have worked with Maintenance & Operations to keep all trees, bushes, and other plant life trimmed and to a minimum. The Police have also introduced a Crime Prevention through Environmental Design program, among others to support student safety.
- Consider an Early Start Schedule
- Academic Affairs has explored block scheduling with an early start. Their primary focus has been to organize key classes in a clear schedule (e.g., English class followed by a math class that does not overlap).
- Addressing food and housing insecurity
- The Tartar Support Network is managing the Food Pantry, and Compton College is considering housing options as described in the Compton College 2024 comprehensive master plan.
- Reassessing school climate in spring 2020
- The Office of Institutional Effectiveness will administer a School Climate Survey in spring 2020.
- Professional Development Days designed to increase connection and awareness of the College's Strategic Initiatives and direction among all faculty and staff
- The College has created a campus-wide professional development schedule throughout
2010-2020. These events are usually scheduled on Fridays and are open to all faculty
and staff. The College hired a Manager of Professional Development and is currently
conducting a Professional Development Needs Assessment to inform future professional
Nursing Program Update
Compton College continues to work closely with the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN), in the implementation of the activities designed to support our Nursing program to complete the following:
- Outstanding items related to the transition from El Camino College
- The implementation of the Concept-Based Program for our Nursing Program
- Seek Board Approval for the Assistant Director of Nursing job description
- Develop a robust Professional Development Plan for full-time and part-time nursing faculty
- Improve the Compton College Nursing Program Graduates performance on the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX)
The January 2020 conference call was postponed because of the two-day training workshop conducted by Dr. Linda Caputi at Compton College for the Nursing faculty on "The Curriculum Revision Toolkit" which took place January 27-28, 2020. Both of our BRN nursing consultants, Dr. Donna Schutte and Dr. Badrieh Caraway attended the first day of the workshop. They spoke highly of the presentations and participation of the faculty members. Dr. Schutte said the presentation was very informative and seemed well-received by all in attendance. Dr. Caraway was confident that the workshop will assist our faculty in the full implementation of the concept-based curriculum.

Compton College Transition Update
The Compton College Transition Committee will continue to meet through June 30, 2020,
to ensure and monitor all items cited in the updated Partnership Transition Plan have been fully implemented. The next Compton College Transition Committee meeting
is scheduled for Tuesday, March 3, 2020, at 2:30 p.m. in the Compton College Boardroom.
The implementation of the Compton College Ellucian Banner Enterprise Resource Planning
(ERP) system will continue. Ellucian is providing additional professional services
to assist with the Compton College Banner ERP implementation from February 3, 2020,
through July 31, 2020. The expenses for these additional professional services are
paid by Ellucian.

Register Teams for Student-Athlete vs. Faculty and Staff Dodgeball Tournament
In celebration of National Student-Athlete Day, Compton College will host a Dodgeball
Tournament on April 6 at 5 p.m. in the Tartar Gymnasium. Six teams of 10 Compton College
employees are currently being formed. Interested parties are encouraged to pick up
a team registration packet in the Tartar Athletics Office (Building W). Registration
packets and an entry fee of $25 per team are due March 26. For more information, please
