Message from the PRESIDENT/CEO


Congratulations to the Compton College community on a successful completion of the fall 2018 semester! The holiday season is here, and the New Year is quickly approaching. To all of the dedicated employees at the Compton Community College District (CCCD), I wish everyone a joyous holiday season and a prosperous and healthy 2019! This has been one incredible journey and we are moving closer to Compton College's transition from the El Camino Community College District on June 7, 2019 at 11:59 p.m.

I would like to congratulate the recently elected CCCD Board of Trustees members; we look forward to working with you. The CCCD held a swearing-in ceremony for its Board of Trustee members on December 11, 2018. Four of the five trustee areas were up for election during the November 6, 2018 midterm general election. Current Board member Sonia Lopez, Trustee Area 3, has two more years of service in her four-year term. Incumbent Trustees Andres Ramos, Trustee Area 1, and Dr. Deborah Sims LeBlanc, Trustee Area 4, were elected to another four-year term. Newly elected Board Member Dr. Sharoni Denise Little, Trustee Area 5, will serve a four-year term; and Barbara Jean Calhoun, fills the Trustee Area 2 vacancy, and will serve a two-year term.

The 2019 winter term and spring semester are just around the corner, and online registration is currently in progress. Compton College's winter term begins January 3, 2019 and the spring semester begins February 9, 2019.

Real #114 Housing and Food Insecurities Conference - Thank You!

I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all who helped make the Real #114 Housing and Food Insecurities Conference a resounding success! Compton College hosted 230 guests who engaged in meaningful discussions that can lead to innovative solutions for this growing challenge occurring in colleges across the country. I would also like to thank all of the guest speakers and panelists who gave their time and expertise to this important cause.

El Camino College/Compton College Transition

The El Camino College/Compton College Transition Committee has been working together on implementing items cited in our updated Partnership Transition Plan, which is our internal planning document for the El Camino College/Compton College Transition. The next El Camino College/Compton College Transition committee meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at 2:30 p.m. in the Compton College Boardroom.

Most notably, Compton College's new Ellucian Banner ERP system will go live on Monday, January 14, 2019. The updated Compton College Ellucian Banner ERP system implementation timeline is available here.

Compton College Enrollment: Every FTES Counts!

The following is some updated information about enrollment management at Compton College and strategies to address declining enrollment.

  • As of December 7, 2018, Compton College has achieved 2,189 Full-Time Equivalent Students (FTES) for fall 2018 and our goal was 2,372 FTES.
  • As of December 20, 2018, Compton College has achieved 265 FTES for winter 2019 and our goal is 300 FTES.
  • This year, Compton College has increased the number of dual enrollment courses offered at our local high school districts through our Afternoon College Courses, Early College Courses at the Compton Early College High School, and through our AB 288 College Courses at Compton Unified School District high schools.

Compton College will continue to implement strategies cited in the 2015-2018 Compton College Enrollment Management Plan. Work also continues on the 2019-2022 Compton College Enrollment Management Plan, which will be linked to our Institution-Set Standards and the Foundation for California Community Colleges Vision for Success report. The goal is to have the 2019-2022 Compton College Enrollment Management Plan completed sometime in January 2019.

In addition, following strategies have been implemented to increase enrollment at Compton College for winter/spring 2019:

  1. News releases: winter/spring registration, as well as classes available.
  2. Free social media: daily/weekly posts on Twitter and Facebook regarding registration and classes available.
  3. Winter/Spring 2019 class schedule posted online November 9, 2018; available at the Bookstore on November 30, 2018.
  4. Registration reminder postcard mailed to all in-District residents by December 15, 2018.
  5. Online advertising (November-December 2018) ads targeting reverse/transfer students from four-year colleges and universities, promoting summer classes (CSUDH, CSULA, CSULB, CSUN, UCI, and UCLA)
  6. Print ad (February 2018) targeting high school juniors, seniors and parents, scheduled in Long Beach "School News" newspaper.
  7. Paid social media ads to be scheduled via Facebook and Instagram for winter and spring registration (December 2018 - January 2019).
  8. Emails targeting current Compton College students who have not yet applied or registered for winter or spring classes (December 2018 - January 2019).
  9. Billboard ads (December 2018 - January 2019).
  10. Online/Streaming iHeart ads for spring registration to be scheduled for January 2019.
  11. Compton.edu website: spotlight winter/spring registration information on the homepage.


Compton College Meta-Majors and the Most Popular Majors and Programs Report

Compton College has adopted the Completion by Design (also referred to as the "Tartar Completion by Design") framework to guide its priorities, decision-making, and evaluations. This framework reflects the students' postsecondary journey using the concepts of Connection, Entry, Progress, Completion, and Transition. Included in the Tartar Completion by Design framework is the implementation of Guided Pathways, which is being coordinated on our campus by the Tartar Focused & Directed Pathways to Completion Committee. Guided Pathways has four main goals, also referred to as the Four Pillars of Guided Pathways:

  • Create clear curricular pathways to employment and further education.
  • Help students choose and enter their pathway.
  • Help students stay on their path.
  • Ensure learning is happening with intentional outcomes.

Compton College has developed "Meta-Majors" to support students' early academic exploration in broad areas of interest for fall 2019. Meta-Majors typically involve an entire program of courses that happen to overlap or cross between similar disciplines, ideally allowing students to take classes that will count towards their degree or certificate before they have decided on a specific course of study to pursue. Student Health Center Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

The Compton Community College District held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Dec. 11 for the Compton College Student Health Center and welcomed new health care services partner St. John's Well Child and Family Center. Through this new student health services agreement, the Student Health Center will be operated by St. John's Well Child and Family Center 32 hours per week. The health care services provided to enrolled students include medical services, physical exams, dental screenings, behavioral health, nutrition, family planning, assistance with benefits enrollment, and more.

"School-based health care plays a critical role in providing health care services to students in a convenient and comfortable setting-their college campus. We are honored to partner with Compton College to provide vital health care services to thousands of its students, in order to improve student and community health outcomes. As the largest school-based care provider in Los Angeles County, we know that students' who are healthy and manage their health have greater success and engage fully in their educational experiences," said Jim Mangia, president and CEO, St. John's Well Child and Family Center.

Students may make appointments in advance by calling 323-541-1411 or on a walk-in basis. The hours of operation are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1-5 p.m., and Wednesday 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and 4:00 - 7:30 p.m. Compton College students are assessed a $19 student health fee per semester and $16 per session (such as during the summer).

New Drinking Water Stations on Campus

Compton College now has water-filtration stations to fill reusable water bottles! Some of the stations offer chilled water depending on availability of electricity. The Compton College Associated Student Body officers presented this recommendation for a more environmentally friendly option. There are seven water-filtration stations around campus at the following locations:

  • Library-Student Success Center, first floor north entrance
  • Math and Science Building, first floor
  • Music Building
  • Vocational Technology Building, first floor
  • Allied Health Building, east
  • Row Building C, near the men's restroom
  • Football Stadium, near the women's restroom

Remember to bring your reusable bottles to campus so you can fill up!

AB 705 Student Success Act of 2012: Matriculation Assessment

AB-705 Seymour-Campbell Student Success Act of 2012: matriculation: assessment is a bill signed by Governor Jerry Brown on October 13, 2017, that took effect on January 1, 2018. AB-705 requires that a community college district or college maximize the probability that a student will enter and complete transfer-level coursework in English and math within a one-year timeframe and use, in the placement of students into English and math courses, one or more of the following: high school coursework, high school grades, and high school grade point average.

The Compton College AB-705 workgroup has been meeting the last few months to plan and implement changes at Compton College. The following individuals are part of the workgroup:

    Dr. Stephanie Atkinson-Alston, Vice President of Academic Affairs
    Amber Gillis, Assistant Professor, English and Academic Senate President
    Dr. Dalia Juarez, Assistant Professor, English Composition/Developmental Reading
    Dr. Malinni Roeun, Instructor, Mathematics
    Lauren Sosenko, Director of Research and Planning
    Gerson Valle, Instructor, Mathematics and Division Chair

The purpose of this workgroup is determine Compton College's plan to set its students on a path to complete transfer-level English and math in one year. Both the English and math departments have made significant changes to course offerings and are considering other curriculum changes to support students as they complete these courses. In addition, the following actions are being implemented as a part of the Compton College AB-705 plan:

  1. Hired one AB 705 English faculty coordinator and one AB 705 math faculty coordinator at 20 percent reassigned time each for spring 2019 and fall 2019. The faculty coordinators will receive a stipend of $1,000 per month during the summer and winter months. The goal is to phase out the AB-705 faculty coordinator positions by spring 2020. The AB-705 faculty coordinators will participate in monthly meetings with key administrators to discuss the integrated planning as it relates to Student Equity and Achievement (SEA). AB-705 implementation is a critical component of the Compton College Integrated Plan.
  2. Over the next year, additional Professional Development activities for full-time and adjunct English and math faculty will be provided beginning in winter 2019.
  3. Purchase 175 Chromebooks as a pilot program for selected English and math courses. The pilot program will begin in spring 2019 for the selected English and math courses.
  4. Continue with the implementation of multiple measures placement based on high school grades for students instead of using assessment test scores for English and math course placement.
  5. Continue collecting survey data from current students' high school GPA, as well as English and math courses and grades. Through the survey, students who are in developmental English and math will have the opportunity to be placed in a higher level English and math course for the spring 2019 semester.
  6. Redesign the English and math bridge programs to assist in preparing students for transfer-level and above English and math courses.

2017-2018 Compton Community College District Financial Audit Report

Vavrinek, Trine, Day and Company LLP, the District's independent external auditing firm recently completed the 2017-2018 Compton Community College District Financial Audit Report. The Compton District Annual Financial Audit was completed on time and has been submitted to the California Community College Chancellor's Office with an unmodified opinion of the financial statements (page 3, paragraph 1). Below is a summary of the results regarding the 2017-2018 Annual Financial Audit Report:

  1. Compton District general fund ending balance was $11.753 million, which is above the 10 percent minimum reserve requirement pursuant to Compton District Board Policy 6200.
  2. Compton District reported no audit finding for the fifth consecutive year. Throughout eight fiscal years, the Compton District has reduced the number of audit findings from twenty-six in 2010-2011 to zero for five consecutive years by implementing internal controls, policies, and procedures.
  3. The 2017-2018 Annual Financial Audit Report reported no audit adjustments, nor did it report material weaknesses in the CCCD's internal controls.
  4. The CCCD was in compliance with the 50 Percent Law for the fifth consecutive year.


Update on Compton College Hiring

The recommendations from the Faculty Prioritization Committee were reviewed and the following faculty positions have been approved for the 2019-2020 year:

    Counselor/ Articulation Officer
    Automotive Technology (roll-over from the 2018-2019 year)
    English as a Second Language
    Guided Pathways Counselor (3 positions)
    Nursing (2 positions)

I would like to thank the members of the Faculty Prioritization Committee for their work on this committee and for their hiring recommendations. In addition, the following full-time faculty positions for the 2019-2020 year will be filled through categorical funding:

    Guided Pathways Counselor (Student Equity and Achievement funding)
