Message from the PRESIDENT/CEO


The fall 2018 semester begins on Saturday, August 25, 2018 and we are entering the final push to increase enrollment by encouraging students to register! The fall in-person registration assistance period is August 13 through September 7, including Saturday, August 25, 2018. Students may register online via MyECC and the fall 2018 class schedule is available here.

The CCCD will hold a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the completion of phase 2 of the CDC playground renovations on August 21 at 3:30 p.m. New Student Welcome Day is scheduled for August 22 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and will include a resource fair highlighting all the student support services available on campus.

We are proud to present the new Three-Year Report to the Community that will be mailed to all residents in the Compton District on August 20, 2018. Every student is a success story at Compton College! The stories of several accomplished students and alumnae are highlighted in the new publication that provides on overview of student success and achievements at Compton College for the three-year period of 2014-2017.

Information Session for Interested CCCD Board of Trustees Candidates

The Compton Community College District (CCCD) will host an information session on August 22, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. for individuals who are interested in serving on the District's Board of Trustees. The session will take place in the Compton Community College District boardroom, located at 1111 E. Artesia Boulevard, Compton, CA 90221.

The information session is for candidates vying for four open seats in the November 6, 2018 election for CCCD Trustee Areas 1, 2, 4 and 5.

The information sessions will provide an opportunity for candidates to receive an update on the CCCD and Compton College regarding facilities, accreditation, the Compton College Transition Plan, Academic Affairs, and the Compton College Promise program.

Professional Development Days - August 23-24, 2018

This year, Compton College is hosting its own Fall 2018 Professional Day activities. All Compton College faculty and staff are expected to attend the general session at 9:00 a.m. Thursday, August 23. Breakfast and lunch will be provided to all Compton College employees in the Staff Lounge. The activities scheduled for Friday, August 24 are for Compton College faculty only.

Accreditation Update

An updated version of the "Accreditation and the Process Forward" document for Compton College was recently published. The document includes accomplishments and the next steps in the process of establishing Compton College as an independent community college under the governing authority of the CCCD Board of Trustees. El Camino College/Compton College Transition

The ECCCD and CCCD Transition Committee has created a new webpage - www.compton.edu/compton114 - in anticipation of upcoming communications with Compton College students and the community about the Compton College accreditation process and the transition plan. The first of such communications was sent to students the first week in August and is entitled the "Tartar Message." Future "Tartar Messages" will be sent to Compton College students quarterly.

Compton College is implementing the Ellucian Banner ERP system and our goal is to have the system fully implemented by spring 2019. The Compton College Ellucian Banner ERP system implementation timeline is available here.

The El Camino College/Compton College Transition Committee continues to implement action items cited in our internal planning document: Partnership Transition Plan document. The next El Camino College/Compton College Transition committee meeting is scheduled for September 4, 2018, at 2:30 p.m. in the Compton College Boardroom.

There is much work that needs to be done to complete the transition of this historical partnership. Our goal is to complete Compton College transition from El Camino Community College District and operate under the governing authority of the CCCD Board of Trustees on June 7, 2019 at 11:59 p.m.

Compton College Enrollment

Over the past several years' enrollment at Compton College has been declining. Compton College did not meet our 2017-2018 enrollment goal of 6,060 FTES. For the 2017-2018 year, Compton College reported 5,979 FTES. More information on Compton College enrollment planning and the new Student-Centered Funding Formula will be communicated to you in the coming weeks. Compton College will continue to implement strategies cited in the 2015-2018 Compton College Enrollment Management Plan. We will also begin working on the 2019-2022 Compton College Enrollment Management Plan.

CCCD Community Forum Recap

The Compton Community College District Board of Trustees held a Community Forum in July 2018. At the forum, I provided an update on Compton College and Compton Community College District; the presentation from the Community Forum is available online here.

Additionally Compton College has scheduled four Student Forums covering the same topics. The dates of the Student Forums are scheduled in the Student Lounge to accommodate students' class schedules:

Public Safety Building Groundbreaking Ceremony


The Compton Community College District (CCCD) hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on July 17 for its all-new, 5,550 square feet Public Safety Building, which will house the CCCD Police Department. The $4.7 million construction project, which included demolition of the previous Kindred/Foster Care Building at the southeast corner of campus, was made possible with funds from the 2002 Measure CC local general obligation bond. The state-of-the-art building will incorporate natural lighting through Solatubes, cool roof technology, and efficient lighting, heating and air conditioning control systems. The building will accommodate a front lobby with a service window connected to the dispatch area, staff offices, an open office area, meeting room, storage areas, locker/shower rooms, interview rooms, armory, watch station, break room, custodial room, exterior storage, and room for evidence storage. The Architect of Record for this project is Little Diversified, the construction manager is PCM3, and the project contractor is TELACU.

Compton Community College District Budget Augmentations and Enhancements

As required by Accreditation Standard IV regarding "Decision-Making Roles and Processes," Compton College recognizes and uses the contributions of leadership throughout the organization for promoting student success, sustaining academic quality, integrity, fiscal stability, and continuous improvement of the institution.

I have approved the following 2018-2019 Budget Augmentations and Enhancements  after reviewing the priority lists provided by all divisions and departments on campus. The lists are a result of the collegial consultation and an example of the decision-making process at Compton College.

One-time Augmentations and Enhancements (Total $105,000):

  • Admission & Records - $6,000 enhancement/augmentation for transcript-related contracts; $6,540 enhancement/augmentation to hire two part-time records clerks
  • Athletics - $13,250 augmentation to repair facilities; $8,000 augmentation to pay officials; $15,000 augmentation for student-athlete meal money
  • Facilities - $5,000 enhancement to provide free feminine products
  • Financial Aid - $600 enhancement/augmentation for memberships and training related to Veteran Services
  • Institutional Research - $8,650 augmentation to purchase SENSE survey system; $10,500 enhancement to purchase Qualtrics online survey system; $1,000 enhancement to increase non-instructional supply budget; $1,100 enhancement to cover the cost of dues and memberships; $4,000 enhancement to increase conferences budget; $350 enhancement to create a publications/periodicals subscription budget
  • Outreach - $25,000 enhancement to expand and support the Outreach efforts of the college

Real #114: Housing and Food Insecurity Conference

Compton College will host the "Real #114 Housing and Food Insecurity" conference on December 7, 2018. The conference will focus on how to assist community college students with basic needs, and is free for Compton College faculty and staff. Other California Community Colleges will have the opportunity to bring a team of up to five individuals to Real #114 Conference at a cost of $600 per team. Registration for the conference will begin on September 4, 2018. The conference will feature keynote speaker Sara Goldrick-Rab, professor of higher education policy and sociology at Temple University and founder of the Wisconsin HOPE Lab. Additional speakers and presenters will be announced in the coming weeks. The Real #114 Conference promises to be an incubator for local, regional, and statewide strategies to support students in need at community college campuses.

Compton College was recently featured in an ABC7 Eyewitness News story and I was interviewed for the segment by co-anchor Leslie Sykes who grew up in Compton and is the daughter of Abel B. Sykes, Jr. who became the first African-American president of the former Compton Community College in 1970. The video is available online at the ABC7 Eyewitness News website here.
