Message from the PRESIDENT/CEO

April 2019

With only seven weeks until the end of the 2018-2019 academic year, Compton College has a full schedule of activities and events in the next couple of months.

This week was highlighted by several important events including the Groundbreaking Ceremony for Instructional Building #1 and the kick-off luncheon for the Oliver W. Conner College Promise program. The all-new Instructional Building #1 is a 28,845-square-foot, state-of-the-art instructional building to house classrooms for Compton College. It will be the second new instructional building constructed on district grounds since the 1990s following the opening of the Allied Health Building, which was completed in January 2016. The $18.8 million Instructional Building #1 is made possible through the 2002 Measure CC bond and state capital outlay funds. It is targeted for completion in spring 2021.

Oliver W. Conner College Promise Program

On April 16, 2019, Compton College hosted 60 guests at the Oliver W. Conner College Promise Program luncheon in the Student Success Center Art Gallery. The event provided an opportunity to introduce the Oliver W. Conner family to the Compton College administration, Compton College Promise staff, as well as our partners from Compton, Lynwood, and Paramount unified school districts.

CCCD Community Meeting Hosted by Trustee Barbara Calhoun

On April 17, 2019, Compton Community College District Board of Trustee member Barbara Calhoun hosted a Community Meeting from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the Los Angeles Adventists Academy Auditorium in Los Angeles. Topics for this community meeting included accreditation, facilities update, community participation in governance opportunities, and summer/fall 2019 enrollment. We plan to host additional meetings in the future in communities served by the Compton Community College District. Click here to view the presentation.

Accreditation Update

Compton College is in the process of implementing the items cited in the plans section of the ECC Compton Center Self-Evaluation Report and the recommendations for improvement cited in the External Evaluation Report. The status of the plans section and recommendations for improvement are outlined in the Compton College Institutional Self-Evaluation Action Items document. We are also working on implementation of the projects associated with the Compton College Quality Focused Essay-Special Report that was submitted to the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) on November 22, 2017. The Commission acted to accept the Quality Focus Essay-Special Report at its meeting on January 10-12, 2018.

The next Accreditation Steering Committee meeting is scheduled for June 12, 2019, from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Compton College Boardroom. We have established the timeline for submitting the Mid-Term Report to the ACCJC prior to the March 15, 2021 deadline.

El Camino College/Compton College Transition

Compton College Enrollment

Over the past several years, enrollment at Compton College has been declining. For the 2018-2019 fiscal year, Compton College's Full-Time Equivalent Students (FTES) goal is 5,980. We will not meet our enrollment goal as shown in the Five -Year FTES projectionsHowever, with the implementation of the Student-Centered Funding Formula, pg. 82-83 and the transition from El Camino Community College District, Compton College funding for the 2018-2019 year will be the 5,980 FTES amount plus the cost-of-living adjustment identified in the annual Budget Act and adjusted for increases to FTES.

We added additional courses to the spring 2019 second eight-week session, which began April 13, 2019.  Compton College will continue to monitor its Five -Year FTES projections and continue the development of the 2019-2022 Compton College Enrollment Management Plan, which will be linked to the Institution-Set Standards and the Foundation for California Community Colleges Vision for Success report. The 2019-2022 Compton College Enrollment Management Plan will be completed sometime in May 2019.

2017-2018 Compton College Fact Book Highlights

Each month, Compton College will highlight new information from the 2017-2018 Fact Book. For the month of April 2019, we are highlighting the gender breakdown of Compton College student-athletes. Only about 2% of the student population (250 out of 12,205 students) in 2017-2018 participated in athletics at Compton College. While Compton College has more female students overall than male (63% compared to 37%, page 9), there are male more student-athletes than female student-athletes (78% compared to 22%). The male athlete participation increased slightly over the past several years, while the female athlete population decreased dramatically ¾ down to only 55 participants in 2017-18 (down from 90 in 2016-17 and a high of 113 in 2014-15). Please see the chart breakdown on pages 19-20 of the Fact Book. Over the years, Compton College has increased the number of female athletes by adding softball and soccer. In the future, Compton College will attempt to add women's volleyball. However, for the 2019-2020 year, we will focus on increasing the number of women who participate in Compton College's current athletic programs, particularly in cross country, and track and field.
