Cooperative work experience education (CWEE)

CWEE is designed to provide Compton students with workplace experience and enhanced skills. We invite you to learn more about the work experience process with us.

Qualifications

In order to participate in Cooperative Work Experience Education students shall meet the following criteria:

  1. Pursue a planned program of Cooperative Work Experience Education which, in the opinion of the Instructor/Coordinator, includes new or expanded responsibilities or learning opportunities beyond those experienced during previous employment.
  2. Have on-the-job learning experiences that contribute to their occupational or education goals.
  3. Have the approval of the academic personnel.
  4. Meet the following condition if self-employed: Identify a person who is approved by academic personnel to serve as the designated employer representative.

Options for participation in CWEE fall under the categories of registered apprenticeship, self-employment, or engagement in full-time or part-time work.

Participate in part-time or full-time paid employment, and engage in paid or unpaid internships.

    1. Unpaid internship participants must submit a signed and date Compton College Unpaid Internship Agreement form to CWEE Instructor(s) prior to start of unpaid internship; AND
    2. Be enrolled in Occupational Work Experience Education which is supervised employment extending classroom-based occupational learning at an on-the-job learning station relating the student's educational or occupational goal for which his/her college program has been designed.

Self-Employment 

As a self-employed participant, you must identify a person who is approved by the instructor to serve as the designated evaluator. This representative shall be an objective individual in the same profession who can provide the student with constructive and professional feedback regarding the student’s professional growth. The relationship of the evaluator and student must be professional and not personal in nature and agree to accept in the following in writing:

      Employer Responsibilities

  1. Assist the student in identifying new or expanded on-the-job meaningful and measurable learning objectives.
  2. Assist in the evaluation of the student's identified learning objectives.
  3. Validate hours worked.


Requirements

However, before you attempt to jump in, you must complete these steps before you can sign-up for an internship. Take a class in the same discipline as the internship you are seeking.

    1. The instructor for that class must agree you are ready for an internship.
    2. You must create/update or upload your resume approved by the Career Center or Job Placement Specialist in the Workforce Development Center. Once approved, you can meet with CWEE Staff to consider internship opportunities or review the position you would like us to accept (that you bring to us for review).
    3. Log into TARTARS@Work and click on Experiential Learning Manager to complete the CWEE Student Application. Select the "Modules" link at the top of the page on the far right to find the Experiential Learning Manager.

Once your CWEE Student Application information has been confirmed and your resume approved, you will be able to apply directly for internships in the TARTARS@Work system.

The Student

  1. Qualifies and finds an internship on the TARTARS@Work platform or chooses to submit their current work assignment for the experience.
  2. Develops workplace learning objectives with the instructor.
  3. Meets with the instructor at the internship site twice during the semester. (At the beginning of the internship and at the end of the semester).
  4. Reports monthly hours on TARTARS@Work verifying time worked. For each unit of credit, students must intern a minimum of 60 non-paid hours or 75 paid hours.
  5. Completes required assignments.
  6. Adheres to the program requirements as outlined in the Syllabus.
  7. Submits assignments and monthly hours reports via Canvas. Please contact workforce@compton.edu or the Job Placement Specialist if you need assistance.
  8. Completes the Student Orientation in Canvas.
  9. Become aware of the roles and responsibilities held by the instructor and employer through the orientation process.

Course Credit

Cooperative Work Experience Education courses are transferrable to the CSU system. Credit options vary based on the number of hours the student is interning/working and the availability of courses during any given semester. Each unit of credit received requires 60 nonpaid or 75 paid hours of work at the job or internship site.
