UPWARD BOUND MATH SCIENCE PROGRAM

 

The Upward Bound Math Science Program is a federally funded education program for high school students from historically disadvantaged backgrounds as well as low-income families (as defined by the federal income guidelines). The program is designed to motivate and prepare students with academic potential to complete high school and prepare for  college. Students accepted into the program receive free services. The Upward Bound Math Science Program provides fundamental support to participants to complete secondary education and  preparation for postsecondary entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in pre-college performance and ultimately in higher education pursuits. The Upward Bound program serves high school students in the Compton Center target area that have an interest in Mathematics and / or Science; students from low-income families; high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree; and students who are preparing to enter postsecondary education. The Upward Bound Math Science Program  is designed to strengthen the Mathematics and Science skills of participating students. The goal of the program is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science, complete secondary education and to prepare them to pursue postsecondary degrees in math and science. Participants are expected to make a serious commitment to academic education and the Upward Bound Program. Once admitted to the Upward Bound Program participants  remain in the program through high school graduation. Activities are scheduled for students on a year round basis.

Students attend Saturday College on designated Saturdays of each month. Saturday College provides academic enrichment.  It entails  improving  basic skills, maintaining school course work , and preparation for college.  Activities include , English  Math, and Science  Courses, CAHSEE preparation, SAT preparation,  and tutoring. During the week, Upward Bound Math Science Program Specialist provide academic, career and personal counseling. They visit school sites at least once a week to maintain contact with students, their teachers and high school counselor, and to keep track / monitor   school attendance and academic performance. Upward Bound Math Science Program Specialist work closely with participants during their senior year to assist them in selecting colleges / universities, applying for college / universities admissions, housing and financial aid. Tutoring is also provided on weekday afternoons at the request of students; However, students receiving a C or lower in academic subjects are required to attend tutoring appointments until their grades improve.

Eligibility Requirements  
  1. Student must be a current 9th or 10th grader attending a target school: Centennial High, Compton High, Dominguiez High, Lynwood High, Paramount High, or Long Beach Jordan High.
  2. Student must be a U.S. citizen or a Permanent Resident
  3. Students must have an interest in math and / or science
  4. Student must be interested in attending college after graduating form high school.
