Spring 2015 Schedule

First Year Experience Program

What are Learning Communities?

In Learning Communities, the subject matter of two or more classes are integrated. The classes may be designed around a unifying theme to reinforce the students' learning. Students and faculty learn from each other and build a sense of community.  In a learning community, students engage with the same group of students for more than one class period. This facilitates friendships because students support each other through the curriculum. Faculty also spend more time with students and emphasize goals for academic success.

Steps to apply to FYE:

  1. Complete the El Camino College Compton Center application: Application for Admission

  2. Participate in the new student orientation to become familiar with the college and its resources.  This orientation can be completed online (through MYECC) or in person.  Visit the Assessment Center (D26) or the Welcome Center (D27) for orientation dates, times, and to sign-up.
  3. Take the English and Math Assessment Tests: You may take the assessment test at your local high school or the Assessment Center at El Camino College Compton Center (D26). No appointment necessary at the Compton Center.  To be eligible for the First Year Experience you must qualify for English 1A, English 84/A or English 82/B (male students only).

  4. You must submit an FYE program application: FYE Program Application Fall 2014
