Subject: EOPS:: Priority Registration November 20|Counseling Contacts|EOPS Renewal Form| Transportation Assistance

As we approach the end of the Fall 2012 semester, we are also preparing for Winter and Spring 2013. This letter is to inform you of the upcoming events: 1. EOP&S priority registration, 2. Counseling Contacts, and 3. Process for applying for a Winter 2013 book loan and/or a Spring 2013 book voucher.

Priority Registration

Because you are an EOP&S student, you have the privilege of being in the first group of students to register for Winter and Spring 2013. This means all of your classes should be open and available on your registration date. The date for EOP&S priority registration is November 20, 2012. Please check your MyECC email account for your specific registration time. You can register on or after your registration time but not before. If you have not been notified of your registration date, or if your registration date is after November 20, 2012, please contact the EOP&S office as soon as possible. To facilitate your registration, we will have computers available in the EOPS office on November 20 and 21 from 8:00am-4:00pm.

Counseling Contacts

In order to ensure that you are enrolling in the correct courses, be sure to meet with your EOP&S counselor before priority registration. This meeting will count as one of your three required counseling contacts and will also ensure you are registering in the correct courses. Your EOP&S counselor will also be able to complete clearance for prerequisite requirements you have met. Make an appointment for your 3rd contact today at 310-900-1600 ext. 2912.

EOPS Renewal Book Voucher/Loan Application

After you have registered for Winter and/or Spring 2013, submit a copy of your class schedule with the attached book loan application for Winter 2013 and/or Spring 2013 book voucher application, no later than December 6, 2012. CARE students only: you must also attach an updated notice of action or any other cash aid proof dated within 30 days.

Submitting your application on time will help ensure that your request is processed in a timely manner and that you are able to receive your book request during the first week of the session or semester if funding becomes available. Failure to return your book loan application or book voucher application prior to December 6, 2012 , will result in a delay in processing your request and you will not receive assistance during the first week of class.

Transportation Assistance (Pending on Availability of Funds)

In order to be eligible to pick up your gas cards and/or bus tokens, the following must be turned in to the EOP&S/CARE Office before 4:30pm on Thursday, December 6 2012:

  1. Current EOP&S/CARE Gas Card Application OR EOP&S/CARE Bus Token Application
  2. Current vehicle registration (in your name) on file.
  3. Completed Spring 2013 Book Loan/Voucher Application (at minimum)
  4. All Eligible students must be in good standing with EOP&S and CARE

Next transportation assistance will be issued the week after the book voucher application is due on December 10 through December 13 ONLY. Students submitting their book loan/voucher applications after the deadline will not be eligible to receive transportation assistance. Subject: Fall 2012 Progress Reports Letter

EOPS/CARE students are required to submit Progress Reports for each of their courses every semester. Progress Reports for Fall 2012 are to be completed and returned to the EOPS/CARE office by Thursday, October 18, 2012. Your Progress Reports will assist our staff in determining if additional resources are needed to assist you in successfully completing your courses.

Progress reports are available for pick-up in the EOPS/CARE Office beginning, Tuesday, October 8, 2012. Please come to the EOPS/CARE office and pick-up Progress Reports for each of your fall 2012 classes, have each of your instructors do the following: 1. Indicate your current grade, 2. Enter comments (optional),        3. Check any of the applicable boxes and 4. Provide their signature.

After your Progress Reports have been returned, you may be eligible to pick up either a gas cards or bus tokens. In order to receive your transportation assistance, you must meet the following by October 18, 2012:

Below is a list of FREE Research and Residential Programs you can take advantage of in the summer. APPLY NOW, the deadlines are fast approaching.

Berkeley Summer Research Program for Community College Students (Deadline: March 1st)

The Transfer-to-Excellence Summer Research Program at the University of California, Berkeley will be held June 16 – August 12, 2012. This program is open to current community college students interested in pursuing a bachelor’s degree in science and engineering and have a GPA of 3.25 or greater. In particular, women, under-represented minorities, first-generation college students, and students from low-income backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Our summer program introduces energy concepts in energy efficient electronic sciences, nanotechnology and nanoscience, and synthetic biology. Summer researchers have the opportunity to join Berkeley researchers who are working in a collaborative and innovative environment to make fundamental breakthroughs in science and engineering.

The program offers each participant a paid 8-week research experience which includes writing a research paper and completing a presentation of the research outcomes. In addition to participating in cutting edge research projects, the program also offers educational activities including seminars, laboratory tours and field trips, as well as one-on-one advising and support for transfer to a 4-year institution. Students also receive a $3,200 stipend, room and meals, and a travel allowance up to $300 to travel to/from Berkeley.

2. The Summer Public Health Scholars Program (SPHSP) at Columbia University (Deadline: February 14  extended to February 29)

The Summer Public Health Scholars Program (SPHSP) is designed for undergraduate students to increase interest and knowledge of public health and biomedical science careers. SPHSP is a partnership between Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, Columbia University School of Nursing and the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. Together they represent the broad spectrum of public health practice. SPHSP grant funding was awarded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Office of the Director, Office of Minority Health and Health Equity (OMHHE).

The program is designed for undergraduates in their sophomore or junior year, and recent baccalaureate degree students, who are undecided about their career goals and who have a minimal GPA of 2.5. The program includes Public Health course work at Columbia University; hands-on field experience and immersion in a diverse, economically disadvantaged urban environment; seminars and lectures with public health leaders, and mentoring by faculty members, ensuring students exposure to the breadth and importance of public health as a career option.

Program Offering Include:

SPHSP is a ten week summer program that begins May 28, 2012 and ends August 3, 2012. Program offering include:

  • Orientation: One week Orientation at Columbia University Medical Center. During this orientation, scholars will be introduced to their mentors, their field placement sites and the field of public health. During the second week, students will participate in a one week Orientation at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention IN Atlanta, GA.
  • GRE Preparation Course: Students will participate in a GRE Preparation course provided by Kaplan
  • Field Experience/Mentoring: Scholars will be paired with health professional mentors of various health disciplines in a public health setting. Each of the selected students will be interviewed by the Program Coordinator to determine the most appropriate placement. Students will work under the guidance and supervision of their mentors, 3 days a week for eight weeks, gaining direct exposure to the practice of public health.
  • Field Trips: Scholars will have the opportunity to go on supervised field trips once a week to various communities throughout the New York City metropolitan area to observe public health interventions and programs in operation.
  • Academic Enrichment: Scholars will attend 3 lectured base courses one day a week for eight weeks. The courses are: 1) Introduction to Public Health, 2) Introduction to Epidemiology and 3) Health Disparities and Cultural Competence. The courses will be facilitated by Columbia University Medical Center faculty from all four health science schools. Scholars will work in small groups with their Teaching Assistants to discuss practical application of class work. Students will work on current health problem or issues using “real” case studies. Lectures will be held at Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons.
  • Stipend: Stipend will be provided to all program participants.
  • Travel: Each scholar will be provided with round trip travel.
  • Housing: Housing will be provided to all students.

Program Eligibility

  • Students who will have completed at least two years of college at the beginning of the program
  • Recent college graduates (after April 2011) who have not been accepted into a graduate program
  • Program Students with an Associate degree must provide proof of acceptance into a four-year institution
  • African American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian American, American Indian/Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, people with disabilities, and economically-disadvantaged individuals are encouraged to apply.
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5

3. The David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA is currently accepting applications for the following summer academic enrichment programs for 2012:

 

  • Premedical/Predental Enrichment Program (PREP)  (Deadline March 1)
  • Summer Medical Dental Education Program (SMDEP) (Deadline March 1) 

 

PREP is a seven week summer academic enrichment program that targets students from educationally and financially disadvantaged/underrepresented backgrounds.  Students are exposed to the rigors of academic medicine and/or dentistry.  Included are preceptor ships with physicians in clinical and research settings.  The program is enhanced by students being mentored in intimate, structured cluster groups by trained teaching assistants; accomplished medical students. The program is free, however housing is not provided.  A stipend is given to students for living expenses.   The postmark deadline for submission of all required material is March 1, 2012.  Applications and further program information are available at:

SMDEP is a six-week summer academic enrichment program that targets educationally and financially disadvantaged freshman and sophomore college students by providing intensive and personalized medical and dental school preparation.  This national program is funded through the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and is offered at 12 locations.  The program is free and provides on campus housing, and a small stipend.  Deadline for applying is March 1, 2012. Priority Registration
Because you are an EOP&S student, you have the privilege of being in the first group of students to register for Winter and/or Spring 2012. This means all of your classes should be open and available on your registration date. The date for EOP&S priority registration is November 22 & 23, 2011. Please check your MyECC email account for your specific registration time. You can register on or after your registration time but not before. If you have not been notified of your registration date, or if your registration date is after November 23, 2011, please contact the EOP&S office as soon as possible. To facilitate your registration, we will have computers available on November 22 and 23, 2011 from 8:00am-4:00pm.
 
Counseling Contacts
In order to ensure that you are enrolling in the correct courses, be sure to meet with your EOP&S counselor before priority registration. This meeting will count as one of your three required counseling contacts and will also ensure you are registering in the correct courses. Your EOP&S counselor will also be able to complete clearance for prerequisite requirements you have met. If you have not done so already, make an appointment for your 3rd contact or for walk-in hours today at 310-900-1600 ext. 2912.
 
EOPS Book Voucher/Loan Application
After you have registered for Winter and/or Spring 2012, submit a copy of your class schedule with the attached book loan application for Winter 2012 and/or book voucher application, no later than December 1, 2011.
CARE students only:  will have to also attach an updated notice of action or agency certification of cash aid benefits dated within 30 days.
Submitting your application on time will help ensure that your request is processed in a timely manner and that you are able to receive your book request during the first week of the session or semester if funding becomes available. Failure to return your book loan application or book voucher application prior to December 1, 2011 will result in a delay in process your request and you will not receive your assistance during the first week of class. Transportation Assistance
In order to be eligible to pick up your gas cards and/or bus tokens, the following must be turned in to the EOP&S/CARE Office before 4:30pm on Thursday, December 1, 2011:

 

  1. Current EOP&S/CARE Gas Card Application OR EOP&S/CARE Bus Token Application(You can find a downloadable version of gas card and bus token applications here: http://www.compton.edu/studentservices/eops/eopscaredocuments.aspx)

  2. Current vehicle registration (in your name) on file.
  3. Completed Spring 2012 Book Loan/Voucher Application (at minimum)

December transportation assistance will be issued the week after you submit your book voucher application and class print out December 5 through December 8 and December 15 ONLY. Students submitting their book loan/voucher applications after the deadline will not be eligible to receive transportation assistance. Gas cards and bus tokens will be distributed in the bursar’s office as follows:

As other colleges reduce class offerings that are offered here, students from other colleges are eager to enroll at theComptonCenter. The Transfer Center has 18 spots available for a very special campus visit to CSUDH.  First come, first serve! CSUDH is sponsoring a campus visit and a special presentation from Dr. Shabazz who transferred from Compton Center to CSUDH and went on to Harvard. Please visit theTransfer Center in room D-29 to sign up ASAP.

In order to receive credit for this workshop you must do the following:
1. Reserve your seat on the bus in the Transfer Center for the CSUDH Fieldtrip/Presentation in Room D-29 before the event.
2. Make sure to sign your name in the “EOPS Sign-In Sheet” upon boarding the bus. (If your name is not on the sheet, you will not receive credit for the workshop).

2. Fill out the EOP&S Transfer Fair Questionnaire and
3. Submit completed Transfer Fair Questionnaire to the EOP&S Office no later than 4:30pm on Thursday, November 3, 2011.

Subject: Progress Reports

EOP&S/CARE students are required to submit Progress Reports for each of their courses every semester. Progress Reports for Fall 2011 are to be completed and returned to the EOP&S/CARE office by Thursday, October 20, 2011. Your Progress Reports will assist our staff in determining if additional resources are needed to assist you in successfully completing your courses.

Progress reports are available for pick-up in the EOP&S/CARE Office beginning, Monday, October 10, 2011. Please come to the EOP&S/CARE office and pick-up Progress Reports for each of your Fall 2011 classes, have each of your instructors do the following: 1.Indicate your current grade, 2. Enter comments (optional), 3.Check any of the applicable boxes and 4. Provide their signature.

After you have completed these steps return your completed Progress Reports to the EOP&S/CARE Office on or before October 20, 2011. Please adhere to office distribution hours to submit Progress Reports. The office hours are the following:

Monday-Thursday        10:00 am-12:00 noon and 2:00 pm -4:00 pm

Friday                          10:00 am-11:00 am 

After your Progress Reports have been returned, you will be eligible for an EOP&S/CARE gas card if you have an EOP&S/CARE Gas Card application and current vehicle registration (in your name) on file in the EOP&S/CARE office.

Submitting your Progress Report is a mandatory requirement of the EOP&S/CARE program and failure to return your Progress Reports will cause you to be ineligible for any addition services from the EOP&S/CARE program. The Fall 2011 semester is well on its way! In order to ensure that you are on track to receive your AA/AS, certificate and/or to transfer to a four year university, make sure to schedule an appointment with an EOP&S/CARE counselor as soon as possible. Remember, EOP&S/CARE is here to help you succeed. This meeting will count as one of your three required counseling contacts and will also allow for your continued eligibility for transportation assistance.
