To make college education more accessible and affordable, Compton College signed the "Compton Promise" agreement with the Compton Unified School District (CUSD) on October 11, to provide guaranteed admissions and one year of free classes to Compton College for all CUSD graduates.

"Over the years, the Compton Unified School District and Compton College have collaborated and maintained a rewarding partnership that supports student success," said Keith Curry, president of Compton College. "The establishment of an Early College High School in 2015 is one of the highlights of this partnership. It is now the perfect time to expand the Compton Promise by offering access to higher education for even more students."

Through the Compton Promise, CUSD high school graduates who attend Compton College full- time (12 units) after graduation will have enrollment fees waived for the first year. The one-year of free college classes includes the fall semester, winter term, spring semester and summer term at Compton College. The first students eligible to participate in this program are the CUSD class of 2018 students who graduate and enroll at Compton College in fall of the same year. Students can choose from a variety of educational pathways: earn an associate degree or certificate, transfer to a four-year college or university, or pursue career technical education.

The "To & Through College" Compton Promise also includes the following benefits for CUSD students:

  • Assistance with the registration steps necessary for full-time enrollment at Compton College.
  • Priority registration at Compton College before graduating from high school.
  • Opportunities to participate in support programs such as the First Year Experience and Extended Opportunity Programs and Services for additional resources to successfully navigate through Compton College and beyond.
  • Assistance with the completion of a Financial Fit Plan to help CUSD graduates access all available financial aid to help pay for college.
  • Summer Bridge classes at Compton College to assist with college level English and math placement.

"The Compton USD partnership with Compton College has been an integral part of building a strong college-going culture across the district," said Darin Brawley, CUSD superintendent. "The Compton Promise is the next step in ensuring our students have equitable access to post-secondary opportunities. I look forward to building this partnership with the support of the CUSD Board of Trustees, and doing great things for the students of Compton." A college-going culture is necessary for economic growth in local communities and the Compton Promise agreement aims to start earlier in the education process to build an awareness that higher education is accessible for CUSD families. Beginning in 6th grade, CUSD students and parents will receive Early College and Career Planning sessions and information. Through CUSD, all middle school students and parents will be asked to sign the "To & Through Pledge" to make them aware of the Compton Promise and all of its benefits, including one year of free classes at Compton College for all CUSD graduates.

"The Compton Promise is such an exciting partnership for our students and families," said Satra Zurita, Compton Unified School District Board of Trustees president. "It will provide the students of Compton an amazing opportunity and stepping stone to college access, not only at Compton College but with the California State University and University of California systems as well. The entire board of trustees is elated to lay the foundation of the Compton Promise, and we look forward to the continued growth of the college-going culture in the Compton USD." The Compton Promise will begin in fall 2018 for Compton Unified School District graduates.
