The First Year Experience program at ECC Compton Center is designed for students who are attending college for the first time. The FYE program is composed of four learning communities that are linked with a common theme. One of which is an accelerated cohort learning community that is ECC Compton Center’s second cohort of all-males designed to address the low enrollment and retention of males at Compton Center. During the 2016-2017 academic year, 120 first-time students are enrolled in the FYE program

Last spring, the FYE program was reorganized and is now under the supervision of Chelvi Subramaniam, Dean of Student Learning. In addition, Janette Morales was hired as the new FYE counselor/coordinator. During the next year, administration will be exploring opportunities to slowly expand the FYE program at ECC Compton Center.

Stephanie Chavez wanted to quit after her first semester at El Camino College Compton Center that is until she enrolled in the First Year Experience program. “I can’t emphasize enough how FYE helped me,” said Chavez. “Everyone from the professors to the counselors and the FYE coordinator helped me succeed in the last two years. I’ve improved my GPA and now I’m ready to transfer to a four-year university!”
