Three Faculty Members Receive Honors

Congratulations to three El Camino College Compton Center faculty members who were recently honored by professional organizations for their contributions on local and state levels!

Michael Odanaka
Michael OdonakaMichael Odanaka, counselor and human development instructor, was named recipient of the Full-Time Faculty Member of the Year Award for his leadership and local advocacy efforts on behalf of all faculty members. The award is given annually by the Faculty Association of California Community Colleges (FACCC) at its Advocacy & Policy Conference in Sacramento.

He is one of four honorees selected by the FACCC Board of Governors from a group of educators in California who were nominated by their peers for awards in different categories.

“I am honored to receive this award on behalf of the entire faculty at El Camino College Compton Center,” said Odanaka in his acceptance speech. “I have the privilege of serving the local communities along with an extraordinary group of individuals dedicated to teaching, counseling, and providing vital student support services. The faculty has worked incredibly hard to help build and strengthen the partnership between the El Camino College and Compton Community College Districts.”

The colleague that submitted the nomination letter to the FACCC conveyed, “Mr. Odanaka believes in the power of faculty, and its ability and obligation, to lead for the sake of the students and the community, both past and present.”

Vanessa Haynes and Pamella West-Lee
Vanessa HaynesVanessa HaynesVanessa Haynes, academic counselor, and Pamella West-Lee, child development instructor, were recently inducted into the National Association of University Women’s Hall of Fame by its West Coast Cities Branch for their ongoing contributions to the local communities related to education, social issues and community impact.

Inductees are selected bi-annually and the ECC Compton Center faculty members received their honors at the NAUW West Coast Cities “A Tribute to Excellence” Scholarship Luncheon on March 22. El Camino College District Board of Trustee member Kenneth Brown was also inducted into the NAUW Hall of Fame.

The NAUW West Coast Cities Branch partners with ECC Compton Center in supporting a variety of events including: the College and Health Community Day, veteran’s celebrations, Counseling Association of California workshops, and the Annual Women’s Conference in conjunction with El Camino College.
