New Dean of Student Success
El Camino College Compton Center named Dr. Chelvi Subramaniam the new dean of student success. This newly created position directly supports ECC Compton Center’s mission to ensure the educational success of students from the diverse communities it serves. Subramaniam assumed her new responsibilities on January 6 and will lead all student success programs and services.
The dean of student success is responsible for planning, developing and implementing a Student Success Plan at ECC Compton Center. Subramaniam will work with faculty and staff from Academic Strategies, Communication Studies, English, English as a Second Language (ESL), Human Development, Learning Resources, Mathematics, and the Library to foster an environment of learning and success that meets the varied needs of students and the community.
Subramaniam joined the Humanities Division in 1989 as a tenured professor in English, Speech and ESL. Since 2004, she has chaired the Humanities, ESL and Foreign Languages divisions, and since 2009, she has served as the coordinator and facilitator of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) at ECC Compton Center.
As an educator with 25 years of experience, Subramaniam said she always believes in the high potential of her students, and expects them to develop into great citizens. “The expectations I set for my students are the same expectations that I would set for myself,” she said. “I let students know they are capable of achieving whatever they set their minds on.”
Subramaniam earned her doctorate in education at the University of Southern California’s Rossier School of Education in 2012. She holds master’s and bachelor’s degrees in English literature, both from the University of South Alabama.
