Vice President's Message
Welcome to the fall 2013 semester! Hopefully, you all had a chance to recharge this summer and are once again ready to help students achieve their dreams. Let’s make 2013-14 another successful year for El Camino College Compton Center students. Each year, the academic achievements of these students are a testament to a dedicated and hard-working faculty and staff. I am happy to report that 300 students filed petitions to graduate during the spring 2013 semester, 230 students participated in the commencement ceremony and graduated with associate degrees; and 85 students earned certificates. While official transfer data will not be available until the end of this year, approximately 20 students participated in the transfer admit event in June to celebrate the academic milestone of transferring to UC, CSU, and private/out-of-state four-year institutions this fall. Transfer students attending the event included Michelle Aguilar who will attend UCLA as a history major; Ramel Davis who received a full football scholarship to Greenville University (Illinois) to major in criminal justice; and Melissa Barajas who is transferring to the University of San Francisco as a double major in politics and biology, to name a few.
This issue of Center News highlights additional achievements by ECC Compton Center students and faculty. Please read the personal stories of the two 2013 Presidential Scholars; Tartar baseball’s successful season, including standout Juan Avena who was drafted to MLB; and the impressive examples of students’ literary and artistic work showcased in the annual Voices of Compton journal. In addition, adjunct English instructor Hiram Sims shares his story about realizing his dream of teaching creative writing and being able to help his students get published. We can use these success stories as inspiration in motivating more students to be successful in their educational journeys in the coming year.
There are a lot of positive things happening at ECC Compton Center for the 2013-14 academic year. We are pleased to welcome eight new faculty members. The First Year Experience program will expand to five cohorts and 150 students, including an all-male cohort stemming from the Brothers2Brothers mentoring initiative. We are also working to further develop and establish the honors transfer program. Major construction and facility upgrades continue, and while it is a temporary inconvenience, the final result will benefit both students and faculty. To help ECC Compton Center combat low enrollment trends for fall, the Outreach Program and its student ambassadors were out in the community this summer providing information about the quality academic programs and student services offered at ECC Compton Center. Outreach Teams visited churches, youth groups, schools and other community organizations in an effort to get more students enrolled here.
As we continue to navigate these trying times for California community colleges, I know we are all committed to doing the best with the resources we have. Faculty and staff support are key in laying the foundation to help students achieve their goals.

Student Success: Joseph Romero-Reyes
ECC Compton Center alumnus Joseph Romero-Reyes recently fulfilled his life-long academic goal of being accepted to a four-year university when he transferred to the University of California, Merced in spring 2013 to major in psychology. After completing one semester at UC Merced, he transferred to the University of California, Irvine this fall. He is the first member of his family to attend college.
Romero-Reyes graduated from Vista High School in Lynwood, Calif., in 2006 and like many high school graduates, he was not sure of his career direction and was not really aware of the resources available to aid him with access to higher education.
His passion for sports broadcasting and video editing inspired him to attend film school, which later helped him acquire an internship position for a television news program. After working for a while in the broadcasting field, he felt his current level of education was not enough to help him advance in a corporate career, so he decided to pursue a degree in psychology.
As a child, Romero-Reyes suffered from anxiety disorder and consequently the disorder became the reason he decided to become a counselor and help others. “Being a kid with anxiety disorder is hard enough, and having non-English speaking parents made it more difficult to receive the adequate treatment for my condition”, says Romero-Reyes. “I want to pursue a career in psychology not only to have financial security, but also to help non-English speaking, low-income families like my own with psychological counseling in their language and at affordable rates.”
When he asked peers and relatives for advice on which college to attend, ECC Compton Center was recommended for its quality academic environment and convenient location. After researching the local community colleges, he made the choice to enroll at ECC Compton Center in 2010.
“El Camino College Compton Center exceeded my expectations and allowed me to acquire the adequate tools, as well as helped me establish a solid academic foundation which propelled me to the four-year university level”, said Romero-Reyes. He made the most of his ECC Compton Center experience by taking a leadership role as an ASB officer, serving as the Commissioner of Classes and Curriculum.
Romero-Reyes credits the work-study program and Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) for providing the necessary resources to attend college. He was hired as an ECC Compton Center student worker and received assistance with expenses through EOPS.
“EOP&S helped me by providing encouragement and moral support through the program’s knowledgeable counselors, and also assisted me financially with book vouchers or book loans and gas cards,” said Romero-Reyes. “Thanks to the experience I gained at ECC Compton Center, I know I will make my dreams a reality.”
Congratulations to the 2013 Presidential Scholars!
El Camino College Compton Center students Albino Celis, Jr. and Mariela Castro were named as the 2013 Presidential Scholars. Celis and Castro received their awards at the annual Academic Awards Tea. Presidential Scholars represent students who have shown academic strength, singular focus and the desire to reach their highest potential, while overcoming obstacles in the pursuit of their dreams. Here are their personal stories of success.
Albino Celis, Jr.
Bellflower resident Albino Celis, Jr. decided to advance his learning at El Camino College Compton Center to overcome some of the socioeconomic barriers he faced growing up, and to provide a better life for his family. A young father with limited financial resources, Celis has carried up to 19 units per semester while also providing for his daughter. He has managed to avoid the pitfalls that claimed many of his peers. Of the fifteen boys in his fourth-grade class, he is one of only three pursuing a bachelor’s degree. He graduated from Paramount High School in 2009, and is thankful his sister, cousin and friends constantly reminded him about the importance of higher education and attending college. His plans now include transferring to a four-year college or university to major in business administration. After earning his bachelor’s degree, he hopes to attend law school.
As part of the ECC Compton Center’s curriculum, Celis says he was introduced to complex works of literature, and has attended a wide range of classes, including accounting, economics and law. He believes the exposure to new and advanced problem solving is what inspired him to seek out new possibilities and a future in the business world. Celis praises ECC Compton Center, which he says allows its students “to discover that higher education is a self-fulfilling journey of enlightenment.” He believes attending ECC Compton Center has greatly enhanced his critical-thinking skills while providing him with an outstanding education.
Mariela Castro graduated with a cumulative 3.84 GPA and is transferrring to California State University, Long Beach this fall to continue her studies in business administration. Castro, a single mother of two children, immigrated to the United States in 2005. She first enrolled at ECC Compton Center in 2010 with the goal of improving her English language skills. She worked full-time during the day and attended evening ESL courses.
She has taken full advantage of the many programs and student services offered at ECC Compton Center, including financial aid, which enabled her to advance her education by earning an associate degree. Castro is proud she maintained a high GPA throughout her tenure at ECC Compton Center, and credits the faculty and staff for providing guidance and the academic skills necessary to achieve her educational goals.
Through her experience at ECC Compton Center, Castro is convinced there are no limits when it comes to learning. She describes ECC Compton Center as being one of the greatest influences for change in her life. She believes the experience has helped her to be a better mother, serving as an exemplary model for her children as they set goals for themselves in the future.
“New Student Welcome Day” Kicks Off Fall Semester
ECC Compton Center hosted incoming students at its annual “New Student Welcome Day” on August 21. This orientation is the ideal way for new students to begin acclimating to college life. Touring the campus, meeting faculty and new friends, as well as becoming familiar with student services, are the first steps in charting a course for success at ECC Compton Center.
Participants also had a chance to meet with academic advisors; register for classes; get a firsthand account of campus life from current students; and visit the student services, academic programs and departments’ showcase. These informative workshops and activities are designed to give students, who ultimately plan to transfer to a four-year institution, the tools they need to be prepared for their first day of classes and beyond.
In addition, students who were enrolled in ECC Compton Center’s First Year Experience (FYE) program participated in an orientation immediately following the conclusion of New Student Welcome Day. The FYE program is effective in helping students excel in their first year of college by providing a supportive learning community that includes educational and career services. El Camino College Compton Center English Instructor Helps Students Publish Literary Work
El Camino College Compton Center English instructor Hiram Sims’ passion for the written word came at an early age after reading his first greeting card.
“When I was eight, my mom sent me to the local drug store to pick out a card for someone who was sick,” said Sims, an adjunct English instructor at ECC Compton Center since 2010. “Reading the cards, I realized they were poems and I was immediately captured by the meaning and the brevity of the words. I would spend hours reading the cards and writing the verses down; then I would adapt them with some of my own words.”
Today, Sims inspires his students by encouraging them to tell stories about their own personal experiences. In his English 25A creative writing class, each class begins with what he calls a “mood check” where the students tell stories about things that have happened in their lives. “I believe other people’s storytelling and written work help provide inspiration for any writer, so we hear a short story from each student at the beginning of every class,” said Sims.
Sims recalls that while working toward his degrees in creative writing at the University of Southern California, one of his professors, an accomplished poet, published his students’ work for them at the end of the semester. “I went to college specifically to teach creative writing and I knew that when I had the opportunity, I wanted to help my students publish their work,” said Sims.
In 2012, he helped the students in his 25A Creative Writing class do exactly that by compiling their work into a book titled “The Invisible Door.” Then in 2013, he published “The Chopping Block” featuring the literary work of the twelve students in his subsequent creative writing class at ECC Compton Center. Sims pays for the publishing of the books himself and receives no profit from the books. Through an outreach program supported by LA Bookshelf Publishing, he gives all of his students a complimentary edition of the book, and copies are also available for purchase online. “I believe my job is to not only to teach my students how to write better stories, but also how to be a part of the writing community,” said Sims. “It is important that I encourage students to create valuable work rather than simply securing information to memory.”
His students are grateful for the experience. ECC Compton Center student and budding writer, Linsey Shorters, was so excited to receive her copy of “The Chopping Block.” She said she took Sims creative writing class to fulfill her childhood dream of publishing a book, a dream she has had since she was five years old.
“Professor Sims has a gift for presenting information in a way that is not textbook or boring,” said Shorters, an aspiring lawyer who also has attended Loyola Marymount University. “His class is set up like a workshop with students reading their work, discussing the elements of writing, and giving constructive critiques. He teaches his students to speak up, consider all opinions, and be confident that what you say really matters.”
Shorters said she plans to take another class or workshop taught by Sims. “I would encourage other students to take Professor Sims’ 25A Creative Writing class whether or not they have written anything before. He really helps you improve and develop your craft.”
Sims was honored as the recipient of the Outstanding Adjunct Faculty award at ECC Compton Center in 2012. He founded the Urban Poet’s Society club on campus and also routinely brings notable writers to ECC Compton Center to talk with students about creative writing. He is a published poet and author, and is often invited to guest lecture in the academic community. Sims holds a master’s degree in professional writing and a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Southern California.
ECC Compton Center Hosts First Spanish Spelling Bee
ECC Compton Center’s Spanish Department held it’s first Spanish Spelling Bee at the end of the spring 2013 semester. Congratulations to Evelyn A. Medina who was named the winner of the event! Five students from each section of the Spanish 1 courses offered during the spring semester were selected to participate, with total of 23 students entering the event.
Many members of the ECC Compton Center’s faculty provided support by donating either their time or money to make this event successful. The Spanish Spelling Bee judges were Emily Monge, Aurora Cortez-Perez and Larry Herring. Juan Tavárez served as the moderator for the competition, and Andrew Brabbee and Axa Maradiaga worked with the judges to help the competitors make a smooth transition from one round to another.
“A special thanks goes to Juan Tavárez, a recently hired Spanish instructor, who developed the idea for this competition and brought it to fruition,” said Chelvi Subramaniam, Humanities Division Chair, who helped organize the event. “I would also like to thank Vice President Barbara Pérez for her support of the Spanish Spelling Bee. The collective support and attendance at this event definitely demonstrates Compton Center’s focus on student success.”
Participating students were excited about the possibility of “winning” even if they did not personally win the competition. They supported their peers and were proud of the students who were able to proceed to the next round. Extended discussions by the students about the event indicated the importance of this competition. According to Subramaniam, participating students went home with higher self-esteem with the realization they were able to successfully contend in a foreign language competition.
The Spanish Department wants to continue empowering students to succeed in their college experience and plans on hosting a second Spanish Spelling Bee competition this fall.

Tartar Baseball Celebrates a Strong 2013 Season; First Baseman Juan Avena Drafted by the New York Mets
El Camino College Compton Center’s baseball team wrapped up a successful 2013 season by advancing to the third round of the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Super Regional Playoffs. It was the best-ever showing in the playoffs for the Tartars, who finished the season 25-18 overall and 14-7 in league play.
Three ECC Compton Center players earned All-South Coast Conference first team honors: starting pitcher Nick Sanchez, first baseman Juan Avena and designated hitter David Terarzas. In addition, outfielder Chris Jacobs was named to the All-SCC second team. Shortstop Larry Barazza, pitcher Omar Pelayo, and catcher Lester Salcedo made the All-SCC honorable mention list.
In addition, infielder Juan Avena was drafted by the New York Mets on the 37th round of the Major League Baseball first-year player draft on June 8. The Compton native, who attended Warren High School, was chosen as a first baseman with the 1,011th overall pick in the 40-round draft. During the Tartars’ standout season several athletes ranked among the final All-SCC statistical leaders, including Chris Jacobs who led the league with eight home runs and finished fourth in the conference with 34 runs batted in. Pitcher Nick Sanchez tied for the league lead with 10 wins and also tied for third with 78 strikeouts. Pitcher Omar Pelayo recorded 93 strikeouts, the second best total in the league this year.
ECC Compton Center players finished one-two in the batting race. David Terarzas lead the league with a .412 average and Juan Avena finished second with a .385 average. LeJohn Baker finished among the league leaders with 11 stolen bases.
2012-13 ‘Voices of Compton’ Literary/Art Journal Showcases Examples of Outstanding Student Work

More than 26 literary compositions and artistic works created by students at El Camino College Compton Center were published in the 5th annual edition of Voices of Compton, a fine arts journal and competition. The ECC Compton Center Humanities Division recognized the students’ exceptional academic and creative work with prizes in five categories.
“It is good to have a creative and expressive outlet for students which can also help them academically and professionally,” said Ruth Roach, the ECC Compton Center English professor who oversees the publication of the journal. “It is very rewarding for the students to have all of their hard work pay off at the end of an academic year in such a creative way.”

Keith Curry Receives Distinguished Alumni Award from UCI
Dr. Keith Curry, Compton Community College District Chief Executive Officer (CEO), was recently honored with a Distinguished Alumni award by his alma mater, the University of California, Irvine (UCI). Curry was recognized at UCI’s 43rd Annual Lauds & Laurels ceremony, along with 17 other recipients. Sponsored by the UCI Alumni Association, the award recognizes the honorees’ outstanding contributions to the university and their communities.
Established in 1971, the UCI Alumni Association awards program honors alumni, students, faculty and staff who have brought recognition to the university through their achievements, studies or profession. To date, more than 800 outstanding individuals have received the Distinguished Alumni award.
“Lauds & Laurels celebrates the accomplishments of a select group of people whose efforts positively impact UC Irvine and beyond,” said Jorge Ancona, UCI assistant vice chancellor, alumni relations. “These are the most prestigious awards conferred by our alumni association, and the campus is a better place because of the achievements of our honorees.”
Curry assumed the role as permanent CEO for the Compton Community College District effective July 1, 2013. He previously served as the interim CEO since March 2011. Before overseeing District operations, he served as the El Camino College Compton Center dean of student services beginning in 2006. Under his leadership, many existing student support programs at ECC Compton Center have expanded and others were created, most notably the First Year Experience (FYE) program. Other positive outcomes during the past two years include increased student enrollment and transfers; new full-time faculty members hired; new state-funded construction projects; and a balanced budget with a reserve.
CCCD Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee to Meet September 26
The next meeting of the Compton Community College District Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee will be held on Thursday, September 26, 2013, at 5:00 p.m. in the District boardroom located at 1111 E. Artesia Blvd., Compton, CA 90221. All meetings are open to the public.
As outlined in the Education Code Section 15278, the role of the Citizens' Bond Oversight Committee is to "inform the public concerning the District’s expenditure of revenues received from the sale of bonds authorized by the voters."

CCCD Hosted Information Sessions
for Individuals Interested in Serving on Board of Trustees
The Compton Community College District (CCCD) has held information sessions this summer for individuals interested in serving on the District's Board of Trustees. A total of 10 applications have been submitted to date.
As a result of the District's redistricting process, all five seats will be up for election on the November 5, 2013 ballot. The filing period opened July 15 and closed on August 9. All those interested in learning about the District and the upcoming election were invited to attend this information session.
Trustees elected for Areas 2 and 3 in November 2013 will serve an initial term of two years, and Trustees elected for Areas 1, 4 and 5 will serve a term of four years, as determined by a random drawing conducted by the District's legal counsel at the May 16, 2012 board meeting.

The newly adopted trustee areas follow city boundaries, transportation corridors such as freeways, and other natural boundaries, while equalizing population among each of the trustee areas.
El Camino College Compton Center Names 2013 Distinguished Faculty and Staff
El Camino College Compton Center recently announced its honorees for the 2013 Distinguished Faculty and Staff awards at the Annual Faculty and Staff Appreciation Breakfast, an event designed to thank all members of the campus community for their commitment to ECC Compton Center and its educational mission. Vanessa Haynes, academic counselor; Dustin Black, adjunct history professor; and Alice Hawkins, staff member, were recognized for their dedication to ECC Compton Center students and to their professions.
Vanessa Haynes, recipient of the Distinguished Faculty award, has served as an academic counselor at ECC Compton Center since 1998. A respected counselor who is valued by her colleagues for her energy and enthusiasm, Haynes is known for her commitment to innovation and her passion for student success. She guides students by developing individual education plans, recommending workshops, and teaching Human Development courses. According to students and peers, Haynes is regarded as passionate about education and goes above and beyond to help students prepare for graduation. She also provides support to veterans, counseling them on the regulations and process for certification for Veteran Education Benefits. Her devotion to ECC Compton Center students and fellow faculty members is reflected in the depth of her involvement, including programs such as New Student Welcome Day, Transfer Center, Athletic Counseling, Student Success, EOPS/CARE, Student Learning Outcomes, and the Commencement Committee. Haynes earned both a master’s degree in education counseling and student personnel and a bachelor’s degree in social science from San Jose State University.
Dustin Black, recipient of the Outstanding Adjunct Faculty award, is an exemplary member of the History Department. He is recognized as an instructor who “is focused on student success and getting the best out of his students.” Black was instrumental in establishing a new chapter of the student honors society Alpha Gama Sigma (Tau chapter) at ECC Compton Center. The Alpha Gama Sigma honors society helps students define and reach their goals by providing the information and focus needed for success. He serves as an advisor for Alpha Gamma Sigma on his own time, is a mentor for the First Year Experience program, and consistently seeks ways to help students excel.
Black earned a master’s degree in history from California State University, Los Angeles and a bachelor’s degree in history from California State University, Long Beach.
Alice Hawkins, recipient of the Distinguished Staff award, is a valued member of the Maintenance and Operations Department. She is recognized for being professional at all times, and contributing beyond her day-to-day responsibilities. When assigned to the Athletic Department, Hawkins coordinated the awards banquet, arranging all details of the event including food, decor and the student-athlete awards. As a member of Homeland Security with the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, Hawkins has earned the rank of Flotilla Commander. She is currently studying to earn a master’s degree in counseling psychology at National University and earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from California State University, Dominguez Hills.
Temporary Parking Available for Students at Crystal Hotel
Due to the ongoing construction and facility upgrades at the ECC Compton Center, arrangements have been made with the Crystal Hotel to provide 150 additional parking spaces for students. The Crystal Hotel is located at 123 E. Artesia Blvd., Compton, CA 90220 (west of ECC Compton Center and Santa Fe Avenue).
Directions to additional parking at Crystal Hotel:
Traveling west on Artesia Boulevard, make a right turn at the hotel entrance light. Take the ramp to the lower parking lot. Parking for Compton Center students is reserved toward the back of the lot between “E” and “G”.
A shuttle will be available to transport students to and from the temporary parking. The Crystal Hotel shuttle pick-up location is near the “E” parking area across from the 24-Hour Fitness Center. The returning Compton Center shuttle location is near Lot H at the north end of the VocTech Building.
The shuttle will operate between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Monday – Friday. The last shuttle leaves Compton Center at 2:00 p.m.
ECC Compton Center Campus Police will monitor the parking lot at the Crystal Hotel, and students must display their ECC Compton Center parking permit in their vehicles when parking in the hotel lot.
Daily parking permits are not available for purchase at the Crystal Hotel. Semester Parking Permits should be purchased in advance, at the Bursar’s Office located in room C-36 for $20 each.
For the fall semester, student parking is currently limited at ECC Compton Center due to construction. Students may park in Lots A, H, and F. Please access Lot A from Artesia Boulevard, or Lots F and H from Greenleaf Avenue. Use the west entrance from Greenleaf Avenue, as the east entrance is closed. There is no through traffic from Artesia Boulevard to Greenleaf Avenue. Construction updates, access information, and a map are available on the Web.
As we continue work to improve the grounds and facilities at the ECC Compton Center, there will be some inconveniences along the way. Please note that access to Compton Center will be continually modified as part of the ongoing infrastructure project. Thank you for your continued patience and understanding.
ECC Compton Center Receives Grant for Recycling Bins
El Camino College Compton Center recently received 10 recycling bins designed specifically for placement at 10 selected areas around the property. The acquisition of recycling bins was made possible by a grant from Keep America Beautiful and The Coca-Cola Foundation.
“For a number of years, various ASB councils have explored the possibility of having recycle bins on the grounds only to discover Compton Center lacked the resources to make it happen,” said Robert H. Butler, ECC Compton Center director of Student Services and ASB advisor. “Congratulations to ASB Vice President Carlos Ornelas and the ASB officers for taking the initiative to apply for the grant to benefit Compton Center.”
The 10 large, plastic recycle bins will be placed near the most populated areas at ECC Compton Center, such as the Student Lounge, athletics field, cafeteria, and the Tartar quad. The addition of the new recycle bins is in line with ASB’s Environmental/Recycle Program already in place.
“We hope ASB’s efforts to improve the overall sustainability of this institution will encourage faculty, staff, students and our community to do the same,” said Ornelas.
ECC Compton Center was one of 156 schools, colleges, local government, and other community groups nationwide that received a grant. Keep America Beautiful selected grant recipients based on a number of criteria including level of need, recycling experience, and the ability of applicants to sustain their program in the future.
Keep America Beautiful and Coca-Cola partnered with the College and Recycling Coalition (CURC) to offer grants to CURC member institutions. The Bin Grant program awards recycling bins directly to recipients and leverages volume buying discounts. In its seven years of operation, the Bin Grant program has placed more than 29,000 recycling bins in more than 500 communities in 48 states and the District of Columbia.
