# 18 Shannon B. Williams

Head Coach Shannon B. Williams enters his 9th season (2003-present) at the helm of the Tartar baseball program, The team has posted consecutive 20 win seasons and a state playoff appearance for the first time in the college’s eighty-four (84) year history. During his tenure as the Tartar’s Head coach eighty-four (84) players have transferred to four year colleges and universities. Seven players have been drafted & signed by professional baseball clubs.

 Williams graduated from Compton College in 1993 and was a two-year letterman as a catcher/pitcher for former Tartar Co-head coaches Simon Peters and Low Clark. After concluding his playing career at Compton College, Williams transferred to California State University at Dominguez Hills, where he received his Bachelor’s degree in 1997. He served as an assistant coach for the Toros under Head baseball Coach George Wing from 1997. In 1998 Williams accepted his first head-coaching assignment at the same high school where he had played as high school catcher; Locke High in South Central Los Angeles. In six seasons as the head baseball coach, He turned a struggling program around, guiding the Saints to a 94-61-1 record along with three league titles and four consecutive playoffs appearances. In the spring of 2000 Williams was honored as the Los Angeles City Wave Newspaper Baseball Coach of the Year.

In 1995 Williams started volunteering as coach/mentor for (RBI) Reviving Baseball in Inner cities program for children throughout Watts & South Central Los Angeles. RBI is sponsored by Major League Baseball to promote the game of baseball and softball to children in urban cities. As a coach / mentor Williams has won the RBI World Series four times 2000,2001,2003,2005.

Coach Williams brings both knowledge and integrity to the Tartar program, and we are extremely proud of his program.

 What it takes to be a Tartar

•  There is a reason that the word STUDENT comes first in student/athletes
•  Respect the game as much as you want to be respected
• Tuck in your shirt, Don't wear your hat backwards
•  Practice hard because you play the way you practice
• It doesn't take any talent to hustle       
• Help your team win whether you play or not    
• Never argue with an umpire, or coach
• Agree to let your coaches train you ( be coach able )
• Attend all required classes (Don't cut class)
• Maintain the grades that keep you eligible and on track for your degree
• Don't tell people what you are worth, prove it to them
• Your parents love you, but they don't know more than your coach about baseball ( be coachable )
• Don't let anyone make an excuse for you
• Be passionate about your teammates and the game 
• The only thing that coaches owe you is HONESTY 
• Be as diligent on defense as you are on offense
• Defense wins more games than offense (you must score a run to win)
• Pitching sets the toneCompton         
• You don't have to be a great athlete to be a good baseball player
• Show off your talent to your current coach and your future coach by doing the following: (ALL THE TIME)   
• Character means doing the right thing when nobody's watching
