New Vice President of Academic Affairs Hired for Compton College

Stephanie Atkinson-Alston

Compton College is pleased to announce that Stephanie Atkinson-Alston was hired as the new vice president of academic affairs, effective Dec. 18, 2017. The vice president of academic affairs provides leadership in the planning, development, and implementation of the Compton Community College District's (CCCD) instructional program, while working collaboratively with academic and student support services personnel. She will also provide technological and research leadership for planning services and programs designed to advance the educational mission of Compton College. In addition, she will plan, develop, recommend, and implement policies and procedures; has oversight for the special instructional program; and will oversee the accreditation process for the college, assuring compliance with Compton College, the CCCD, state, and federal regulations.

Dr. Atkinson-Alston was previously the dean of academic affairs and distance education co-coordinator at Los Angeles Harbor College. From 2009-2013, she held various positions in administration at Los Angeles Mission College including dean of academic affairs and STEM director, acting vice president of academic affairs, and chief information officer. She also served as dean of educational services at West Hills College and completed the Sam M. Walton Free Enterprise Fellowship.

Prior to her career in higher education leadership, Atkinson-Alston had a full career in the United States Navy and earned designation as a master training specialist. She served at the Navy Service School Command in Florida and on the USS Prairie in Long Beach, Calif.

Her professional associations include membership in the International Coach Federation, American Association of University Women, and the California Community Colleges Association for Occupational Education. She was twice honored as Administrator of the Year while working at West Hills College.

Atkinson-Alston earned her doctorate in education and leadership of higher education systems from Fielding Graduate University in Santa Barbara, Calif.; a master's degree in education, administration and supervision from California State University, Fresno; a bachelor's degree in health care management from Southern Illinois University; and an associate degree in liberal studies from Columbia College in Missouri.
