Message from the Provost/CEO
This is a significant time in the history of El Camino College Compton Center. Two
important events recently took place: the four-day visit by the Accrediting Commission
for Community and Junior Colleges External Evaluation Team, and the Grand Opening
and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for ECC Compton Center's first-ever student health center.
In January 2017, the El Camino College Compton Center submitted an Institutional Self-Evaluation Report as part of the process of seeking Candidacy status. On March 6-9, the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) External Evaluation Team conducted a four-day visit to the campus to review the evidence presented in the report, meet with employees, tour the campus, attend various campus meetings and participate in two open forums.
The team concluded their 2017 visit with a team exit meeting March 9. The Team Chair Dr. Kindred Murillo commended the work of ECC Compton Center and El Camino College employees for the progress made to-date.
The information provided during the exit meeting was an unofficial brief summary of the External Evaluation Team's preliminary findings and recommendations during the visit. The ACCJC will meet June 6-8, 2017 to review the official visiting team report. El Camino College's Superintendent/President will be informed of El Camino College Compton Center's accreditation status via a letter from the ACCJC sometime following that meeting.
The visiting team recognized the unique collaborative relationship between El Camino College and the Compton Community College District (CCCD) and its impact on access to higher education within the CCCD's service area. The visiting team commended the Compton District Board of Trustees and the community for their steadfast commitment to teaching and learning, grounded in participatory governance.
The team expressed great appreciation to all who participated in the Self-Evaluation process. The entire team was inspired by the work of ECC Compton Center and El Camino College, and gave the institution a standing ovation at the conclusion of the exit meeting. It was an emotional conclusion to a very comprehensive review of ECC Compton Center.
Over the next couple of weeks, we will continue to work on implementing the items cited in the future plans from the ECC Compton Center Self-Evaluation Report section of our report and continue working on the draft "Decision Making and Governance Manual for the Compton District and Compton Center."
Finally, Dr. Richard Winn, Interim President/CEO of ACCJC will be visiting the ECC Compton Center on Friday, April 7, 2017.

Partnership with Molina Medical Management
The Molina Health Center opened to serve ECC Compton Center students on February 14, and the official grand opening ceremony took place on March 21. The Health Center offers physicals; treatment for colds, flu and ear infections; family planning, including pregnancy tests; and health care education. For an additional cost, flu and hepatitis vaccines are also available.
The center is open three days per week year round: from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursdays. Walk-ins and same-day appointments are accepted, and students have 24/7 access to request appointments, see test results, order prescription refills and more through the MyChart app or website.
ECC Compton Center students will receive free health services during the spring 2017
semester and the summer intersession. ECC Compton Center students will be assessed
the $19 health services fee in the fall 2017 semester. More information about the

Enrollment Management Conference
ECC Compton Center will host its first ever Enrollment Management Conference for faculty and staff, which is tentatively scheduled for 8:00 a.m.-noon May 12. The conference will include enrollment trend data; best practices and strategies to increase student enrollment; and an overview of enrollment management. In addition, a 2015-18 Enrollment Management Plan status report will be provided and we will begin discussions on the development of the 2018-2021 ECC Compton Center/future Compton College Enrollment Management Plan.

Low-Enrolled Educational Programs/Courses
In spring of 2016, the ECC Compton Center established the Educational Programs Taskforce to review low-enrolled educational programs/courses and identify those programs that have been experiencing declining enrollments and poor fill rates of courses being offered. The Educational Programs Taskforce reviewed the past five years of Compton Center section enrollment, % fill, and FTES for all programs offered.
In December 2016, I received the Educational Programs Taskforce recommendations regarding low-enrolled educational programs/courses. The Educational Programs Taskforce provided the following recommendations for ECC Compton Centers' low-enrolled educational programs/courses:
- Retain: astronomy/physics, child development, contemporary health, foreign languages
- Retain at this time: machine tool technology and music
- Right Size: computer information systems
- Discontinue: office administration and recreation
After receiving the recommendations, I met with ECC Compton Center faculty from the programs/courses that were identified as retain at this time, right size, and discontinue. I also met with ECC Compton Center faculty from the Business Division. The purpose of these meetings was to offer the faculty members with an opportunity to provide feedback to me before I made a formal recommendation.
Upon further review, I supported the recommendations of the Educational Programs Taskforce. As a result, the Compton District Board of Trustees approved Resolution No. 02-21-2017C Reduction or Discontinuance of Particular Kinds of Service at the February 21, 2017 board meeting. Resolution No. 02-21-2017C Reduction or Discontinuance of Particular Kinds of Service will result in the Compton District reducing the following Full-time Equivalent Faculty (FTE) in the 2017-18 year:
- Reduce Computer Information Systems (CIS) Instructional Services - 1.0 FTE
- Reduce Office Administration Instructional Services - 1.0 FTE
- Reduce Recreation Instructional Services - 1.0 FTE
During the next year, we will continue to monitor the program/course enrollment for
business, computer information systems, machine tool technology, and music. Also,
we will move forward with the implementation of the approved vision, mission, and
strategic initiatives for the El Camino College Compton Center/future Compton College
that focus on expansion in allied health and advanced manufacturing programs.
2015-16 El Camino College Compton Center Fact Book
The ECC Compton Center 2015-16 Annual Fact Book is now available online at www.elcamino.edu/administration/ir/docs/eccprofile/COMAnnualFactbook2016.pdf.
The Annual Fact Book is an important resource containing trend data about ECC Compton
Center students, student outcomes, and instructional programs and services. The data
in the Annual Fact Book provides background information to facilitate policy analysis
and decision-making. It is a useful tool for ECC Compton Center's departmental planning,
and grant preparation, as well as for the process to accreditation.
ECC Compton Center/Compton District Institutional Standing Committees
As we continue to improve the governance process at the ECC Compton Center/Compton District, I want to encourage you to visit our Consultation and Institutional Standing Committees web page and review the agenda and minutes of each Institutional Standing Committee.
Sometime in April 2017, you will receive a link asking you to complete the 2016-17 Governance Survey. The survey will provide you with an opportunity to provide feedback on the Compton District/Compton Center Governance Structure (i.e. Institutional Standing Committees). We are required to conduct regular governance surveys to meet Accreditation Standard IV.A.7, which states:
Leadership roles and the institution's governance and decision-making policies, procedures, and processes are regularly evaluated to assure their integrity and effectiveness. The institution widely communicates the results of these evaluations and uses them as the basis for improvement.
We anticipate sharing the results from the governance survey before the June 8, 2017
Tartar Success: Pathways to Leadership and Careers Conference
The Tartar Success: Pathways to Leadership and Careers Conference is scheduled for March 30. The conference will feature keynote speakers: Dr. Tyrone Howard, associate dean for equity & inclusion, professor, UCLA; and Dr. Pedro Noguera, director, Center for the Study of School Transformation and UCLA professor. In addition, a panel discussion is scheduled for women and student athletes, as well as opportunities for ECC Compton Center students to connect with on-campus mentors. The Student Conference is scheduled for 8:30 a.m.-2:00 p.m. in the Little Theater and the Faculty Workshop is from 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. in the Staff Lounge. Faculty may register through Flex Reporter.

Northern California University Tour
The ECC Compton Center Northern California University Tour is scheduled for April
10-13. A total of 39 ECC Compton Center students and two chaperones will participate
in the tour. The goal of the Northern California University Tour is to increase ECC
Compton Center's transfer rates to four-year colleges/universities for all student
populations as highlighted in the Student Equity Plan (5 percent within five years).
The tour will also help increase students' awareness of different major options; knowledge
of transfer admissions eligibility requirements; and the different types of institutions
of higher education available in Northern California. Students participating in the
tour will have the opportunity to visit the following six universities in Northern
California: UC Merced, UC Davis, UC Berkeley, CSU East Bay, San Jose State University
and UC Santa Cruz.
